Tips to conserve energy without sacrificing your comfort.

You know the feeling, when you slowly tear open your electric bill and immediately feel your heart and jaw drop.  It's true, you had the air conditioner running non-stop, but what other choice do you have when the temperature tops out over 100 degrees?

The sweltering summer is melting into your pocket book.  But a few simple changes can drastically reduce your energy usage, without affecting your comfort level.
  • Check your AC filters regularly.  Cleaning or replacing filters once a month during periods of high usage will increase efficiency and save money.      BBB Member
  • Replacing a single incandescent bulb with an energy efficient compact flourescent bulb, (one of the squiggly bulbs) can save up to $50.00 over the bulb's lifetime.
  • Check the crevices around windows and doors.  If a playing card fits in the crack you need more weather stripping.
  • Check for drafts and light around exhaust fans and any other places where wire or pipes pass through exterior walls.  Also check the attic and crawl space.
  • Fix all windows and doors that don't close completely or fit tightly.
  • Keep shades closed when the air conditioner is on.  Sunny windows account for 40% of unwanted heat, and can make your air conditioner work 3 to 4 times harder.
  • Install ceiling fans.  The use of ceiling fans can save around 25% on cooling costs and can make the temperature seem 10 degrees cooler.
