The Spanish government intends to improve Spain’s status as a world leader in genetic research and healthcare. By taking a firm step forward to achieve this goal, Spain will participate as a founding partner in the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC), a project with an objective to identify the genomic alterations of the 50 most common types of cancer within the next five years. 
The Spanish Supreme Scientific Research Council (CSIC) has presented a new vaccine to prevent Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. The experimental vaccine, named MVA-B and based on the HIV B subtype, was developed by scientist Mariano Esteban and his team in CSIC’s National Biotechnology Center. 
Spain-based elevation system manufacturer Elevadores Goian announced in November that it will bring its first U.S. working center to Ankeny, Iowa. The company will operate as Goian North America LLC and lease a 16,000 square foot, 12 employee facility that is intended to support the global corporation in the manufacturing, selling, installation and servicing of industrial elevation systems used inside support towers for wind turbines. 
The exhaustion of natural resources could be one of the world’s greatest challenges in the near future. Spain is highly regarded for its leading role in the development of what could become an effective solution for the most vital of all those resources – water. 
Webber, the American subsidiary of Spain-based infrastructure corporation Ferrovial Agroman and one of the leading construction companies in Texas, has been chosen by the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) to build the segment 4 interchange of the Texas Tollway SH 121. 
Spain-based Danobat Group, a world leader in manufacturer machinery, signed a $65 million contract with the Russian railroad company TVSZ, the main freight wagon producer in the country. Rafael Barrenetxea, president of TVSZ, said the contract is a record in the machine manufacturing history of Spain, and that this “is a major achievement in this large cloud of hard economic news.” 
The 12th Annual Transportation Symposium & Business Exchange, organized by the Illinois Department of Transportation and the main transport agencies in the state, CTA, Metra and Pace, took place in Chicago on December 2, 2008. The event was initially begun with the purpose of having a discussion forum and networking ground for transportation contractors, manufacturers, suppliers and professional service providers.
