Quietwater Paddling Notes
Greetings!
Time for another note from the two of us here at Quietwater Films. We remain patiently waiting for snow to melt and spring to return. As some of you may know, my partner Darren, in his alter ego of Rutabaga Paddlesports owner, puts on a pretty mean spring shindig called "Canoecopia". This year's edition was another fine production. Darren pulled a few strings and was able to get the mayor of Madison to declare the arrival of spring such that it coincided with the start of Canoecopia. This was a supreme effort, but sadly as of the snowfall last night (April 3rd), the robins, the worms and the paddlers remain anxiously waiting for that first burst of spring. It's coming soon though!!!!!! We released our latest DVD at Canoecopia this year, paddling the tandem canoe. Even had a big screen TV in our booth to play it. Those of you that paddle by twos, I hope you'll check it out! It is our first two DVD set as well, so there's alot there. Even the family dog makes an appearance. Here's a link to some tandem canoe clips from that movie. Our next project is waiting in the wings. "Inland Waters Kayak Fishing" is the working title. Sponsored by Native Watercraft, we're going to spend some time on the water here in Wisconsin doing some fishing. Quiet, sleek, gas-free, and portable, kayaks are catching the fishing world at a great time. These boats have been known for a long time on the coasts and in saltwater. We think it is time to introduce Native Watercraft fishing kayaks to inland waters. Stay tuned. |

Canoecopia rehash Three big days for paddlers from around the world, arrived in Madison on March 7,8, and 9 this year. And what fun they were. This was the first time Quietwater Films had a booth there. Last year we walked the floor in lurking mode knowing we would have to wait a whole 365 days more before we could play with the other paddlers exhibiting at CC. This year's edition of Canoecopia finally arrived and we were there. read more... |
Pleasant Places to Paddle
This month, we get an article about from Gigi Stafne, a kayaker in northern Wisconsin, who by now must be incredibly anxious to get outside. Although, given the reports of 14 inches of snow in the northern part if this state in the past week, hibernating may still be ongoing. I bet the robins have arrived and the worms are waking up....... Gigi owns and operates Adventure Botanica, an educational eco-tourism company and MI ZI ZAK Kayaks, a paddlesports business. Both are in northern Wisconsin, where I presume she is still hibernating. She writes some great stuff about an area, just north of Eau Claire, WI., I've only passed through and never really spent any time. The lakes and rivers she writes about sound great! She's got me curious about sphagnum bogs and lady slippers now too!
Here is Gigi's article: "...Compass needle is pointing north The old Celts and pagans used to call it Imbolc, this time of the year. They understood what this antsy feeling was all about....

Quietwater Films DVDs
Paddling boats of just about any shape or form is near and dear to us. We think it's a great way to spend time outdoors with family, friends, or by yourself, soaking up what nature has to offer.
We have also observed that, like most other things in life, there is a learning curve to paddling and boating. Our goal with the movies/DVDs we're making is to offer up a bit of specific knowledge and some tips and hints, that we hope will lead to more paddling enjoyment. Here is our website where you can read more about the DVDs we have made and watch some video clips taken from the DVDs as well. If they look like something you want, you can also purchase them from our website.
If you think we missed something and you would like to see more about this missing topic, please email us a description of that topic and we will try to video an answer and post it up on the site, so that everyone can benefit from your question!

| Our goal is still a once-a-month newsletter. Didn't quite meet that goal over the winter, but you all were probably out skiing anyway! We will not sell your email address to anyone else. We just hope that you like what you read here and will hopefully pass it on to others that you think might enjoy Quietwater content!
Next month is a new month, sure to bring in an article from someone out there about a pleasant place to paddle. I'm also quite curious about Dutch oven cooking, which I used to do a good bit of while I was guiding on the Middle Fork of the Salmon. So maybe there will be a bit in the next note about that old style of cooking as well.....
If you want to write an article about your own pleasant place to paddle, all you need to do is write it using the software of your choice. You can send it in directly in email or as an attachment (doc, txt or rtf). Send along a few pictures of your spot as well. You get credit for the article, the rights to it remain yours, but obviously we will post it on the Quietwater Films website and publish it in the email newsletter. You can link to it or otherwise use it as you see fit. If needed, we will edit for spelling and grammar and send you a pre-release copy for your approval before the newsletter goes out.
Enjoy your Quiet times on the water -
