free community presentation: diagnosing and treating bipolar disorder in kids

free community presentation Friday, July 27, 1-3 p.m.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), approximately 7% of children evaluated at psychiatric facilities are diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Understanding the difference between children with bipolar disorder and those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can assist mental health professionals with identification and effective treatment methods.

Soad Michelsen, MD, child and adolescent psychiatrist at Clarity CGC will be the featured speaker during our community event on Friday, July 27. The topic of Dr. Michelsen's presentation will be "Diagnosing and Treating Bipolar Disorder in Kids."

During this 2-hour presentation, Dr. Michelsen will review:
  • Clarifying how child psychiatrists determine the correct diagnosis for children.
  • Appropriate combinations of therapies and accommodations at home and school.
  • Judicious use of correct medications to alleviate the most problematic symptoms for the child.
This program qualifies for 2 hours of CEU credit (LPC, LMSW, NAADAC and PhD). Space is limited, so please RSVP.

Location: Clarity Child Guidance Center (main campus), 8535 Tom Slick, San Antonio, Texas 78229

2nd annual event included a family fun run!

Pinwheel Fun Run

A beautiful, sunny morning greeted the runners and their families for the 2nd annual Pinwheel Run for Hope 5K Trail event in June. In addition to a large group of serious runners and walkers, the e
vent this year included a Family Fun Run. It was a toss-up whether it was more fun for the kids "competing", or the spectators watching. Every participant in the Family Fun Run received a finisher ribbon, and medals were awarded to age group winners for the 5K Trail Run and Walk.

The 5K runners and walkers enjoyed the scenery of the Medical Foundation Trails. Following the events, everyone enjoyed music, activities and complimentary food courtesy of Taco Cabana, and other snacks and post-race refreshments. There were also free post-run massages from Massage Heights as well as drawings for door prizes - including a tablet computer donated by Dell.

Thank you to all the participants, sponsors and volunteers who made this another successful event. We look forward to our 3rd annual Pinwheel Run for Hope 5K Trail and Family Fun Run in 2013!

Kids at Clarity CGC need flip flops, water shoes and other pool wear

Clarity CGC PoolThe Clarity CGC swimming pool provides a welcome relief from the summer heat for the kids in our main campus inpatient program. But the pool provides more than a break from the heat - it's also the place where our kids get to splash around and just be kids.

To add to the summertime fun, and protect the kids' skin and feet, we're collecting pool toys and pool wear during our annual Summer Splash Drive.

From now through August, we welcome your gifts of new flip flops, water or pool shoes, pool toys, sunscreen and plain t-shirts and elastic waistband shorts in all sizes. The kids on our campus range in age from 3 to 17.

Please contact Jenny Jimenez at (210) 582-6497 to make a donation and help us keep the kids cool and protected in the pool this summer.

For your convenience, we also have an online donation link. A gift of $25 will pay for a Summer Pail Pal of flip flops, shorts, shirt, towel and sunscreen. To purchase, donate online, and add "Summer Pail Pal" in the space titled, "What inspired you to give?"

Thank you for your support!
