What Do You Want?

Getting Something Better

For at least 10 years, I have desired a little Havanese dog.    However, we had two big dogs, a Belgium German Shepherd and a fierce Chow mix.

The Shepherd, who passed away, and the Havanese would have worked fine.  However, the Chow has always been a fierce Alpha male, even attacking our Shepherd, which we had to separate.  And, no matter how hard we tried to keep possums out of our backyard, they still came and walked right into the fateful jaws of our Chow.  Sadly, our backyard became a possum graveyard.

So, naturally we were afraid that a Havanese, which is the size of an adult possum, would meet the same fate.  But, now that our Chow is 16 years old (about 108 in dog years), with severe arthritis, we decided to move on getting the Havanese puppy, and would just separate it from our senior dog, even though the vet thought the puppy would be good for him.

A couple weeks ago, I saw an ad for an upcoming Pet Expo.  As fate would have it, there would be a Havanese booth.  I was so excited.  I had been scouring the net to see if there were any rescue dogs of that breed, but long hours of searching showed nothing.  And breeders were out of the city. Some mentioned on their site, they don't ship the dogs.

Walt was getting over a bad bout with the flu, but he agreed to ride with me to the Expo to pick out the new member of our family, or at least get some information on them.

It was a perfect day, and I was so excited.  But, when we arrived at the convention center where the event was to be held, there was a youth expo going on instead. The Pet Expo was the following week.  In my haste and excitement over getting a puppy, I got the date wrong.

The Lesson of Wanting

Driving back that long hour to our home, I was deflated.  What happened?   How could I have made such a mistake?  I knew it was the right time to get the dog because like always, I asked my Higher Self, "Is this the time?"   "Am I doing the right thing?"  We all have our internal "knowingness,"  intuition, a sign that tells us what to do if we ask , and always follow it relentlessly.

When we got home, I jumped on the computer.  Where else could I get that dog that weekend?  I was so disappointed.  Suddenly, I caught myself.   I had been persistent about getting a Havanese.  Ah Hah!  That was the problem. I had to let go of the breed I wanted for 10 years, and ask and trust God to lead me to the right dog for our family.  I felt resistance within myself, but I knew I had to let go, the key in life.

Almost instantly a dog's face appeared on the computer screen from a pet finder web site for rescued dogs.  He was absolutely adorable. Even though he wasn't Havanese, he looked exactly like one.  But, he was even a better fit for us, because he had hypoallergenic " "hair," not fur,  just like Bo, the White House dog.

There are two pictures at the top of this message.  One of these dogs is a Havanese, and the other is now the new addition to the Jackson family.

Give up? The one  of the left is a picture of a Havanese I got off a dog site.  Our new 2 month old puppy is on the right.     He's a Maltese-Poodle mix, called a Maltipoo.

Getting Something Better Than You Thought

When we give up pushing for something, and just trust, our Higher Self will lead us to something better.  That is if we "Let go and Let God."

Your Higher Self Knows Best
Turns out:

  • Our new puppy looks identical to the Havanese
  • The Malti-Poo does not shed or smell.  Havanese do.
  • He will live longer because he's a mix.
  • Better disposition because of being a mixed breed.
  • Great feeling to get a rescue dog.
  • Organization gave us a free vet visit.
  • The Rescue organization owner has a dog show on TV, and showed us how to introduce the puppy to our big dog.
  • We can get free training advice from this expert whenever we want.  A rarity nowadays.
  • Our puppy costs a 4th of the price of the Havanese.
  • Malti-Poos are favorite with celebrities because they travel well.
  • He's already partially trained, and well adapted to big dogs.

Other things too, including, he was de-wormed, had shots and micro-chipped, but you get the idea.

Sometimes it is so hard to let go and Let God when you want something so bad.  But, when you do, your Higher Power takes over and you come under the grace of spiritual law.  Everything flows into your hands.  The results are better than you can imagine.

Love, Light and Blessings.
