Greetings!

I was trying to find some interesting way to connect my topic and the month - and I have nothing.  So I decided to try to find some strange thing tied to May and in this I think I have succeeded.

May 25th is the annual celebration of Towel Day.  I will let you discover what it is, but it is related to literature... a form of communication... and RuBee is a communication technology. (A stretch I know, but you play the hand you are dealt.)

Have a great weekend!

The Gadget - Mvix Media Center

mvix playerThis wired/wireless media center can play just about any file format on your A/V system.  It will play from an internal drive, USB drive, or stream from another computer.

It supports 1080p component or HDMI and 5.1 audio coax or optical.  Not a bad little option of playing media on your TV.

RuBee - The New RFID?
RuBee
RFID seems to be more and more common these days.  And there are a lot of great applications, but RFID does not really communicate.  The use of RuBee tags are generally referred to as asset visibility as opposed to asset tracking.

RuBee does have the ability to communicate and more.  It is a two-way wireless protocol more similar to WiFi than to RFID.  A tag stores its own data, can include environmental sensors, and has a range of 3 to 300 feet.  Each tag has its own IP address which identifies the tag on the network.

The short range of the tags seems like an obstacle, but it allows for good resolution when trying to determine where a tag is located.  A great use for this would be ID badges in a hazardous work environment.  Movement and environmental conditions could be monitored.  In the event of an emergency, rescue efforts could be focused on where people are stranded.

Other features of RuBee include
  • Less affected by metal or water than RFID
  • Secure - tags can use strong encryption
  • Typical battery life of 3-5 years
  • No back-end application is required to lookup data like RFID
  • Tags can have an onboard processor for simple tasks
Whether or not RuBee is the right technology for you, Patti Engineering can help you keep track of your assets (physical or data).  If you need to improve visibility in your operation, we will be there from concept to completion.
