A work appointment left me fortuitously close to my son's sports class in the late afternoon on Monday. How could I not visit? At the Riverside Park near 79th Street, I found the athletic band of 7-year-olds cutting and chasing this way and that in a game of street hockey. Adam was one of the slower-paced kids, and when he saw me he all but stopped in curiosity. In his eyes, I saw just what I myself was feeling: surprise, happiness, complicity. I stayed, enjoying the quiet and greenery while casually observing the boys move on to flag football and then dodgeball. There were no other parents nearby, but that didn't stop me from letting out a little cheer when Adam was the last man standing.
