"PARENTING WITH SENSE AND SENSIBILITY"

October 19-25, 2011
Editor's Note

During his keynote address at the New Parents Expo last weekend, there was a moment when Dr. Harvey Karp borrowed an infant from a mom in the audience to demonstrate one of his famous soothing techniques. As if on cue, the child instantly beamed with smiles while the audience of expectant and new parents seemed to join in a collective sigh. Earlier that morning, I committed a soothing no-no: I woke up one of my own babies--my 11-year-old daughter, Elena--because I needed her to come with me to the Expo and to help the team stuff thousands of gift bags. She didn't smile! But she did get up without complaint and gave us a great morning of work. Is this the magic of maturity, or a moment in time?
