When an elderly cousin died last year, we adopted her dog Lucy, a tiny, sweet-hearted miniature pincher (or mini-pin) as a member of our family. But it wasn't until last week, when I had to sit with Lucy in the vet's office for two hours, that I discovered that dog owners had even more to say about their pets than parents do about their children--and both obsess about a lot of same things: behavior, vaccinations, organic food and fleas (which are the dog equivalent of lice). My favorite tidbit was that you can embed a dog's medicine pill in a piece of cheese, and he'll gobble it down no questions asked. When the next cold comes, I'm wondering if I can service my kids grilled cheese infused with amoxicillin.

*Nothing says fall family fun quite like a day of apple and pumpkin picking. This month, take a short trip out of the city, get a breath of fresh air, and spend some quality time with nature (and the fam!). The are plenty of orchards and farms just an hour-long car ride from the city, and they offer so much more than trees to pick from. Delicious cider doughnuts will fill your tummy, while petting zoos, maize mazes, hayrides and haunted houses promise to entertain the little ones. Check out our list of fall farms for the whole fam.
*All parents hope their kids are healthy enough never to need more than an annual checkup, but it's still great to know that our city is home to some of the world's finest doctors! New York Family (with the help of consumer health research firm Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.) presents our fifth annual list of Manhattan's top-ranked pediatricians and pediatric specialists. We also spoke with seven of these doctors, who represent a range of pediatric specialties and medical centers, and graciously agreed to share with us the joys and challenges of their profession. What follows is a celebration of all the work that docs do to keep our kids healthy and strong. Please enjoy reading The Physician Prescription.
