September 29-October 5, 2011
Bonus Tips

Cultural activities abound for New York families. And one of the great ways to enjoy them and save money is a family membership. Whether the object of your family affection is our zoos, or botanical gardens, great museums, of live performance venues--or any combination of them--there are some wonderful deals to be had. How big a deal? We've done the calculations for you! Enjoy our round-up, and if there are other institutions we've overlooked, visit their website. They may offer a family plan you're not aware of.

The New Parents Expo is coming to NYC the weekend of October 15 and 16. If you are pregnant, or have an infant or toddler, the Expo is an essential stop on your journey into parenting and family. It's informative, inspirational, affordable, and lots of fun--and if you register now, here's a Discount Code of 20% to put use: NYFAM101.

Come one, come all to the Grand Opening of the CMA's New Location at 103 Charlton St. The CMA will host a block party with activities and workshops to open the doors of this bigger and better space. (Saturday-Sunday)

The Bronx Zoo is getting spooky! During the opening weekend of Boo at the Zoo, you can go on a haunted hayride or safari. There's also the ghost-free hay maze to keep the scary stuff at a minimum. (Saturday-Sunday)

From Mexican spice techniques to cake decorating demos, kids will have the chance to meet celebrity chefs and expand their recipe repertoire at the Kids Get Cooking classes--part of the NYC Wine & Food Festival at Chelsea Market. (Saturday-Sunday)

Keep it hot, hot, hot during October's chilly arrival at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Chile Pepper Festival. Dance to the tunes of a mariachi concert, watch circus performers breathe fire and sample local hot sauces at this red-hot event. (Saturday)

"Czech" out the fun, food and festivities at the Czech Street Festival to celebrate this country's Independence Day. You could even win a Prague-bound trip for two. (Saturday)

Get a healthy start to your weekend! The West Side Y is hosting a series of races for the entire family along Riverside Park. The youngest five-year-olds can scamper through a 50-yard dash, while older teens can go head-to-head in a one-mile stretch. (Saturday)

Buzzzzz around Wave Hill during their Honey Weekend which features demonstrations and tastings of this sweet treat. Create a bumblebee costume complete with a kazoo for buzzing, or try on beekeeping gear to explore a hive. (Saturday)

Listen to Moona Luna croon its famous songs, such as "We All Have to Work," at Brooklyn Central Library's Dweck Center. This bilingual band performs in English and Spanish. (Saturday)

Kids, join your favorite redheaded friend for some fun and games at the Ronald McDonald Fourth Annual Block Party. This soiree combines elements of a street fair and a festival for a unique experience. We're lovin' it! (Saturday)

Kick off the NYU Skirball Center's Big Red Chair series with Dan Zanes and Friends, a Grammy-winning band that's sure to get the party started. (Sunday)

Get down and dirty at the Merrell Mud Run - the only time it's OK to play in the mud! Held at Orchard Beach in the Bronx, the run will include obstacles for kids, and they'll have to belly crawl through a giant mud pit to make it to the finish line. (Sunday)

Venture out to Brooklyn's 37th Annual Atlantic Antic Street Fair for some family fun. This festival spans 10 blocks of Atlantic Avenue, and those blocks will be filled with 500 vendors, 100 local merchants and 10 live music stages. Don't miss the Deedle Deedle Dees variety show in front of the Moxie Spot; the band incorporates science and history into rock songs for a musical learning experience. (Sunday)

...And while you're at the Atlantic Antic, hop on over to the New York Transit Museum's 18th Annual Bus Festival. Kids will be able to explore a fleet of vintage buses and take free bus tours. (Sunday)
