A Note from New York Family's Editor:
Friends in the City: I loved "Sex In The City." I loved it for its wit and sexual candor and overly sentimental view of city life. And also for the serious reasons: I related to the four of them, their experiences in love and work, their camaraderie and closeness. One of my best friends--one of the few people with whom I check in regularly--has decided, with his wife, to leave the city and set up shop in Tampa, where he'll have a tenure-track position teaching journalism, along with other goodies like a lot of time off to write his books and enjoy the warm-weather months. I'm sure there will be days when I miss him in a very palpable too-bad-we-can't-meet-for-a-spontaneous-meal kind of way, but I admire how he and his wife (they don't have kids) are being so open-minded and adventurous in trying to shape the course of their lives. I haven't seen the movie version of "Sex in the City" yet, but do any of them move away for good this time? I hope not. --- Eric Messinger ( emessinger@manhattanmedia.com) |
Parenting Tip
Painless Temperature Taking: An easier way to take your child's temperature has arrived. The new TemporalScanner from Exergen takes a child's temperature in two seconds, and it is applied to the forehead rather than invasively, making it easier and more pleasant for all parties involved. The thermometer gauges the naturally emitted heat from the skin over the temporal artery, which runs across the forehead. The TemporalScanner is available at Walgreens, Costco, Babies R Us, and Toys R Us. |
Joy's Shopping Tips*
Scoop It Up: On June 3, from 9 am to 9 pm, shoppers can receive anywhere from 40% to 70% off Scoop's spring and summer merchandise. The sale includes this season's as well as past seasons' items. The merchandise is all priced to move and will also include children's items. This sale is one day only, so don't miss it! Scoop, 1273-1277 Third Avenue, 212-535-5577, www.scoopnyc.com. Waist Knot, Want Not: Pants and shorts were meant to stay on your child's body, not fall below the waistline and impede leg movement. Also, have you ever tried rolling around with those uncomfortable buckles? Myself Belts uses Velcro as a closure, which makes it easy for the child to do it herself, and then there's also no uncomfortable buckle to worry about falling on. The prints come in hip or classic styles, and the belts are sized from 2T through size 7/8. Starting at $14.95; www.citibabes.com. Girly Nail Polish: Girls of any age love to show off their nails with fun, bright colors. Essie, the popular nail polish manufacturer found in almost every nail salon, has come out with a limited edition nail polish set called Color Power. There are four sweet candy shades from dazzling blue to head-turning yellow all packaged together in a plastic flower top box. $15; www.essie.com.

This Week's Bonus Tips
From Egypt to Japan: Animation, sculpture, and traditional Japanese painting are highlights of the Brooklyn Museum's new "© Murakami" exhibit (running through June 13). Takashi Murakami, a Japanese artist who has worked in a variety of media (including designing rapper Kanye West's album cover), is sure to appease guests of all ages. Also sure to interest kids is "Magic in Ancient Egypt" (through September 28), which looks at how Egyptians believed the manipulation of words, images, and ancient ritual could influence the world. Details: The Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, 718-638-5000, www.brooklynmuseum.org.
Operation Superhero: Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City is a fun place to visit any day. The outdoor museum features sculptures and other public art that families can spend the day exploring. But this Saturday there's an added twist: "resident superhero" Shaun "El C" Leonardo leads a special workshop at which kids can use fabric, paint, and recycled materials to construct their own superhero costumes. A discussion on special powers and how to be a good hero follows. Details: Free. Noon-3 pm. Socrates Sculpture Park, 32-01 Vernon Boulevard, Long Island City, Queens, 718-956-1819, www.socratessculpturepark.org. | |
