A Note from New York Family's Editor:

A Writing Internship For Parents: Normally, I use this space to share anecdotes about being a parent. Today, though, I'm writing on a topic I actually know something about: We're presently recruiting our next round of interns. This is a great opportunity for someone interested in magazine writing or freelance writing, as our interns spend their time working on both short and feature-length stories and also have the opportunity to do some editing (as opposed to photocopying and other office chores). We also offer a lot of flexibility in terms of hours and scheduling, including the ability to work largely from home. For these reasons, many of our best interns always turn out to be parents who harbor an interest in magazine writing and now have some time to explore it, or get back to it, as the case might be. If you fit that bill, or if you know anyone who does, I hope you'll forward this note along to them. Anyone who is interested should send me an explanatory note, a resume, and some writing samples if they have some. Best to e-mail me at emessinger@manhattanmedia.com, but snail mail is okay too (New York Family, Eric Messinger, Editor, 79 Madison Avenue, 16th floor, New York, NY 10016). Thank you.

Kids' Poetry: April is National Poetry Month, and kids get their own slice April 11-17, with Young People's Poetry Week. For an interesting twist on this occasion, acquaint your kids with a lesser-known work of one of the most famous children's poetry writers ever--Shel Silverstein. Silverstein's 1964 book "Don't Bump The Glump!" re-released last month, is a menagerie of poems and pictures of silly creatures illustrated by the author in stunning ink and watercolor washes. For more poetry-related activities, go to www.cbcbooks.org/yppw.

Joy Joy's Shopping Tips*

Travel Brightly: If you are an owner of the ubiquitous black luggage bag, you know how frustrating it can be to distinguish between your tote and someone else's. Travel Chic has designed a reversible cover to fit over your luggage handle, with a coordinating luggage tag and keychain to match. It's fashionable and smart at the same time. $26.99; www.travelchic.com.

A Virtual Aquarium: Instead of having to care for and clean your own fish tank, plush animal maker Russ has developed Sea Pals, a virtual aquarium that gives your child the ultimate underwater virtual experience. Each plush animal doubles as a puppet and comes with a secret code to set up an aquarium online. Virtually, your child can feed fish, clean the tank, and fill the aquarium with items to make a real home for the animal. Venture into the ocean to learn about other sea life creatures and ship wrecks, and earn Pearl Points by looking for hidden treasures. $11; www.seapalsworld.com.

Shopping for a Good Cause: Kenneth Cole is hosting a charity shopping night in support of Making Books Sing, which adapts contemporary children's books into full-scale theatrical productions and teaches literacy in the classroom. The shopping will be for Cole's spring collection for both men and women, and there will be cocktails and hors d'oeuvres at the event. The first 50 paying customers will also receive a gift. May 1: 6:30-8:30 pm; RSVP is recommended (events@makingbookssing.org). Kenneth Cole, 130 East 57th Street.

Free Swim! Asphalt Green's annual Big Swim Meet takes place this Saturday, and all kids ages 6-16 are invited! The Big Swim is a free open swim meet where children participate in a day of competitive swim races, complete with starting blocks, officials, and a timed finish-all under the close supervision of trained lifeguards and aquatic staff. Each child gets to take home a medal, a photo with Olympians, a t-shirt, and goody bags. Parents can register their kids online; all kids under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Details: Sessions start at 9 am and are stratified by age; call 1-800-NYC-SWIM for more information. Asphalt Green, 555 East 90th Street, www.asphaltgreen.org.

Lunch Is in the Bag: Teaching your kids to eat healthily is as much a part of parenting as teaching them how to cross the street or tell left from right. But while parents can control what ends up on the plate at dinner and breakfast, lunchtime can be a nebulous area in which lunch items are swapped and mysterious fried foods are purchased at the school lunch counter. For parents looking for some insight on healthy lunches, check out the "Schools, Food and Community" conference hosted by The Nutrition Program of Columbia University and the Baum Forum. The conference will feature workshops, a resource fair, and entertainment for parents, teachers, kids, administrators, and public health professionals. Topics include media and messaging, school food and sustainable development, farm-to-school programs and policy, New York City school gardening, youth and access to healthy foods, and green schools. The conference will be held April 11-12 at Teachers College, ColumbiaUniversity. For more information: www.baumforum.org.
