A Note from New York Family's Editor:

Speaking of Work: For me, one of the great (and unforeseen) dividends of my marriage has been that my wife and I share the challenges and satisfactions and gossip of our respective (and very different) jobs with each other. Being supportive is always a good idea, but it also has its nuances. Can you strategize without dictating? Can you help your spouse arrive at a perspective and possible solution that works for him or her, even though you might handle a situation very differently? Will you fuel her doubts and indignation and neuroses and pessimism with a dose of your own? Or will you help him keep his head in the game? We need to talk about our work--whether it's banking or raising a family or volunteering or whatever--and it's wonderful when you can address that need by turning to your mate.

Parenting Parenting Tip

Lunch Is in the Bag: Teaching your kids to eat healthily is as much a part of parenting as teaching them how to cross the street or tell left from right. But while parents can control what ends up on the plate at dinner and breakfast, lunchtime can be a nebulous area in which lunch items are swapped and mysterious fried foods are purchased at the school lunch counter. For parents looking for some insight on healthy lunches, check out the "Schools, Food and Community" conference hosted by The Nutrition Program of Columbia University and the Baum Forum. The conference will feature workshops, a resource fair, and entertainment for parents, teachers, kids, administrators, and public health professionals. Topics include media and messaging, school food and sustainable development, farm-to-school programs and policy, New York City school gardening, youth and access to healthy foods, and green schools. The conference will be held April 11-12 at Teachers College, Columbia University. For more information: www.baumforum.org.

Joy Joy's Shopping Tips*

Going Green: On April 8, Banana Republic will launch a 50-piece, eco-friendly green collection designed for women and men. The items will be made of renewable or sustainable fabrics, like bamboo and organic cotton, and will retail from $24 to $150. One of the pieces is a short trench coat in time for April showers. Starting on April 22--Earth Day--for one week the company will donate 1% of all in-store sales to Trust for Public Lands, a nonprofit national land conservation organization. www.bananarepublic.com.

Smart Cookies: Back in the day, animal crackers looked like lions, tigers, and bears. But it's 2008 now, and Eco-Planet Organic Cookies' new organic animal crackers come in shapes of hybrid cars, windmills, the sun, and the planet Earth. Available in flavors of vanilla and cinnamon. $1 at www.wholefoods.com.

Flutter Away: With Spring now officially here, everyone is surely ready to hit the parks. The new Flytech Butterfly is for any child that loves butterflies or just loves to launch things into the stratosphere. The toy can twirl and flutter in the sky with its dual wings, and it's crash resistant. It comes with its own charger, where you can also perch it while it awaits its next flight. $24.99, available at www.wowwee.com.
