A Note From New York Family's Editor

November is National Adoption Month, and we can't think of a more timely way of honoring it than by encouraging you to read this week's New York Times series on the state of New York City's foster care system (which you can find online). It re-examines the philosophy that has prevailed over the past 20 years that it's best for children to be cared for and ultimately adopted by families who share their ethnicity. A worthwhile topic for anyone who cares about society's most vulnerable children, it's especially relevant to those considering adoption, who may be encouraged to look locally after reading this series.

Once your child graduates from toddler-dom, she's ready to embrace the world of board games, and you should seize this opportunity, because soon enough they'll be adolescents and they'll want nothing to do with you. Try some classics that you loved: many of them now come in Junior versions that are good for young children. If you want to discover some new games, check out GAMES Magazine's recent "Games Of The Year" lists. On some level, most games involve strategy, and therefore can be rationalized as educational. But, you'd be wise just to enjoy them with your children.

Last week, New York Family hosted a Children's Holiday Fashion Show in partnership with Extell Development Company (www.extelldev.com) and Divalysscious Moms (www.divalyssciousmoms.com). The location was the design gallery of The Rushmore, a new family-friendly luxury condo onthe Upper West Side. It was filled with adorable children who walked the snow-filled runway in the chicest holiday fashions. The feedback we received from parents was so overwhelming, we thought we'd share these special holiday clothes with you, along with the names of the designers and stores where you can find them. (We can't put all the pictures here, but trust us, a visit to the stores is well worth the hunt! You'll also be able to see all the clothes in our December issue.)

 Joy                                                 Bonus Tip

Stokke is making a name for itself as an innovator in stroller design, and its latest set of wheels is ideal for parents who like the "hi-rise" effect.  Raised higher up off the ground than the average stroller, Stokke's Xplory model not only offers kids a more tantalizing view (i.e., they'll gaze into people's faces instead of their knees) but it brings parents and kids closer together so they can better connect and bond. The stroller also doubles as a highchair, makes lifting up your child easier (you don't have to bend over so far), and has features such as adjustable two-way seating and a footrest that grows with your child. For a list of stores that carry Xplory, visit www.stokkeusa.com/wheretobuy.asp.
