A Note from New York Family's Editor

Greetings from our world headquarters at Madison and 28th, where I'm working too late and would really like to get home and distribute some hugs. Almost two years ago, we launched New York Family magazine with the hope that city parents would make room in their lives for an intelligent and lively family lifestyle magazine with a local focus and a filling smorgasbord of stories, stuff, and personal essays. Now we're launching a weekly e-newsletter that will be "a quick hit" of some of the things we do well: a selective mix of tips and suggestions on shopping, on weekend activities, on parenting/family advice, and on whatever else we learn that seems worth sharing. After this email, the newsletter will be sent out every Wednesday. Thanks for coming along for the ride.

Mr. and Mrs. Love Lab: Everyone has their ideas about relationships.  John Gottman did the research. The founder of the well-regarded Love Lab (www.lovelabresearch.com) in Seattle, Gottman has been a leader in the  serious study of relationship dynamics and satisfaction for over 30  years, and he's also skilled at distilling his knowledge into readable  and interesting books. Couples with young children might find something they can relate to in his latest book like "And Baby Makes Three: The Six-Step Plan For Preserving Marital Intimacy And Rekindling Romance. After Baby Arrives"- which despite the suggestive title is mostly about having a great marriage. Others in longer relationships might find some helpful ideas in "Ten Lessons To Transform Your Marriage." Don't be put off by the overly-prescribed titles-that's just marketing and packaging.  These books, which Gottman wrote with his Love Lab co-founder and wife, psychologist Julie Schwartz Gottman, have a lot of wisdom to be mined.  Also worth reading: the fascinating section on Gottman and his ability to analyze and even predict relationship obstacles in Malcolm Gladwell's "Blink."
