One of the greatest things about books is that authors have the ability to transfer us to another place. Places around the world we would not ever have visited until we experienced it in books. So this month's newsletter we will be highlighting several audio books that have a International flavor.
With the popularity of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series of books by Steig Larsson, which for those of you who have not listened to them, are mysteries set in Sweden, book publishers have released several audio books from best-selling international authors.
Here is a list of audio books that provide you a good story while taking you to different places around the world.
Sarah's Key by Tatiana De Rosnay -A story set in Paris, France alternates between 1942 and the current day. The past centers around a 10 year old Jewish girl who is forced to go to the Velodrome d'Hiver with her mother and father, innocently leaving behind a 4 year old brother Michel locked in a secret cupboard with the assurance that she would return to let him out when it was safe. The present revolves around writer Julia Jarmond, a transplanted American who is married to a frenchman and finds herself being consumed by the story of the Vel d'Hiv incident.
The Ice Princess by Camilla Lackberg -This is a number-one best-seller in Sweden. Erica is a thirtysomething biographer struggling with her latest book, deals with her grief over her parents' untimely death and her mixed feelings about returning to her hometown after years in Stockholm. On a whim, she visits her childhood friend Alex only to find her dead in the bathtub. The grieving parents ask her to write an article about Alex for a local newsletter. As Erica delves deeper into Alex's past, she begins to work with a local police officer, Patrik, another childhood friend, and together they uncover secrets that some people would greatly prefer were left secret.
Thirteen Hours by Deon Meyer This is a murder mystery set in and around Cape Town, South Africa. Cape Town Det. Insp. Benny Griessel lands a pair of explosive cases: the gang slaying of an American tourist and the murder of the husband of a washed-up, alcoholic popular singer.
Blood Safari by Deon Meyer Set in the game preserves of South Africa, three masked men break into the Cape Town home of Emma le Roux. She manages to escape but fears that the attack may be connected to recent evidence that her brother, Jacobus, who she thought died 20 years before while serving as a temporary game ranger, is actually alive. Faithful Place by Tana French
Set in Dublin, Ireland. 19-year-old Frank Mackey is waiting in vain for Rosie, who he's supposed to run away to London with. But when she doesn't show, Frank leaves Dublin without her-thinking never to return. Years later, Rosie's suitcase is found in an abandoned house, and Frank, now a detective, returns to his old neighborhood to learn the truth of that long-ago night.
Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson
