As we begin another school year, we look forward to watching and enjoying the progress of our talented students. One of the great benefits of working at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities is the joy of sharing in the artistic and intellectual development of our students. Each day we see students discovering more about themselves and their talents. At a minimum, this discovery requires curiosity and courage. For students to mature, they must look at their art form and their studies and ask "why?" Why did the author, painter, composer, or choreographer make this choice? Why not a different choice? And then they must ask: "How do I fulfill the creator's vision," or "How can I use this work to stimulate my own unique vision or performance?" When their curiosity has captured their interest, then they must have the courage to make the commitment to step beyond their comfort zone to try something new and different. If they are to grow, they must break their own boundaries and risk failure. This step requires a good deal of courage, but artistic and intellectual growth stagnates without the willingness to push beyond the ideas and attitudes that make a person secure. One of our primary goals at the Governor's School is to provide an environment where students, as well as faculty and staff, will feel free to let their curiosity fly and their courage soar. We look at each new school year as a nine month Fourth of July. There is color, excitement, explosions, success, failure, noise, beauty, and wonder. The year will be demanding, rewarding, and fulfilling-we're happy to be underway! We have selected our students because they each have special talents, and now we have the responsibility to support, push, prod, and applaud these emerging artists as they explore the excitement and creativity that explodes with their new growth and new discoveries.

| Ben Gilliam: Recipient of a 2008 Surdna & SC Arts Commission Craft Fellowship |
|
|
Visual Arts faculty member Ben Gilliam received a 2008 Surdna Art Teachers Fellowship and a Craft Fellows grant from the SC Arts Commission to go to Ireland for two weeks in July to study with renowned Silversmith Brian Clarke. He worked and lived with Clarke for two weeks and spent 90 + hours in the studio.
Gilliam notes his experience was an "immersion not only in technique but also into the life of a person who has devoted his life to mastering a craft, and the knowledge he has accumulated over 40 years. A major reason for taking this workshop was not only personal enrichment but also being able to pass this information on to my students. I found that Brian's techniques are very accessible to novice students and can easily be adopted to suit our curriculum."
While there, Gilliam visited Ireland's National Museum and was so influenced by the large collection of silver holloware that he chose to set aside his usual more contemporary design and create the goblet above with a more traditional design aesthetic. He also started a copper tea pot that he hopes to complete this Fall.
In the image to the left, Clarke demonstrates for Gilliam a technique called planishing, which involves finishing the surface of a metal form by striking it with light, controlled blows using a highly polished hammer and copious patience. |

Danielle Alyce Wilson is BB&T!
by Greg Leevy It is clear within minutes of meeting Danielle Alyce Wilson (Dance, '05) that she is BB&T: Beautiful, Brainy and Talented. That combination, and a 1000 watt smile, paved the way for the Columbia native to be crowned Miss Whitmire this year. First and foremost, Wilson is a dancer. She has lived and breathed it since she saw The Nutcracker at age eight. By the time she entered the Palmetto Center for the Arts dance program at Richland Northeast High School, she was well-prepared for the aches, pains, and utter joy in a dancer's life. During her sophomore year, Wilson heard about the Governor's School in dance class. She knew immediately it was where she wanted to be. Indeed, she was so focused on her goal of becoming a professional dancer that she felt not a twinge of separation anxiety when she started the residential high school dance program. Wilson met the challenge like the determined, responsible, confident young artist her family and friends knew her to be. As serious as she is, Wilson has a major fun side. Some of her fondest Governor's School memories are the parties, the proms, and the close group of girlfriends who still call themselves the "Crazy Eight." Still, artistic and intellectual development have always been primary in her life. Naturally, Stas (Stanislav Issaev) and the dance faculty top her list of favorite teachers. But in one breath she rattles off an impressive list of other faculty who were major influences, including Mark Franks, Susanna Schantz, Dana Howard and Jennifer Thomas.
In addition to the power of dance, Wilson believes in the power of the pageant. She does not quibble over whether the Miss America Organization and its counterparts promote "beauty pageants" or "scholarship pageants." To her, pageants are simply an opportunity to empower young women on many levels, from self-esteem to financial independence. That power was in full force recently when Wilson greeted families at the Governor's School booth at Black Expo - Columbia. The crowds adored her, and could not take enough pictures or get enough autographs. A former Miss South Carolina Teen who currently majors in dance performance at USC, Wilson was the 2nd runner-up at this year's Miss South Carolina pageant. Characteristically, she views her placement as a learning opportunity and fully intends to enter the contest again next year in her quest for the gold at the Miss America pageant. With her poise, that smile, and beauty, brains and talent in abundance, few will be surprised if she succeeds!
