| ......AUDITIONING...... |
|
Auditions are coming up for potential Governor's School students as well as current Governor's School seniors who are seeking admission to arts programs in colleges and universities next year. With this in mind, Vocal Arts faculty member Tom Dickinson submitted the following suggestions for auditioning:
If you are interested in a career in the performing arts then get ready to audition, as auditioning is one of the primary jobs of any performer. Once you have the job or the admission to a program or a competition win, that's the easy and fun part, it's the hard work and many steps that are necessary to reach those goals which should be your focus now. Here are some good things to keep in mind as you audition.
1. Perform pieces for an audition that you feel comfortable with. It is better to play or sing something at a very high level than to struggle through a piece that is beyond your abilities. If you can roll out of bed and perform it well, this piece is ready for an audition.
2. Choose pieces that fit your personality. If you don't like a piece chances are you are not going to have your best audition with it.
3. Look your best. Most judges make their decisions in the first couple minutes of an audition. First impressions matter.
4. Be polite. Your judges are trying to determine if you are going to be easy to get along with for the next several years. This is not the time for a diva fit or other tantrum.
5. Smile. It goes a long way.
6. Most of all have fun. Treat any audition as you would a performance for an audience. You obviously love what you are doing or you wouldn't put yourself through all the hard work it takes to get here, so let your judges see how much you love what you do. |

MADISON LOY "SONNY" BYRD Music '04
Sonny Byrd, class of 2004 jazz guitarist, decided to put down his instrument after Governor's School to experience some other non-musical endeavors when he went to Duke University. After a lot of traveling, studying, and pondering questions of life, he found himself coming full-circle back to music, only this time with a twist.
Sonny started a band called "Stella by Starlight"(left, Sonny far left) that has taken on a life of its own. Quickly transcending the misnomer "college band," Stella by Starlight has recorded two albums, found a following all over the world through MySpace and MTV, and become a staple of the music scene in the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill). The band's most recent honor is a Top 5 nomination by MTV for the 2007 Best Music on Campus Woodie Award.
Stella by Starlight pursues a unique blend of cutting edge pop music with more traditional rock elements to create a sound that blends electronics with live instruments, and pop with indie rock. The band has played for hundreds of satisfied fans at venues in Chapel Hill, Durham, and surrounding areas, even playing an auditorium show for almost 1,000 last April. They are currently looking for record label contracts and spots opening up for nationally touring bands.
Sonny has a music video for his solo song 'Jackal Pack' that you can find on YouTube. And Stella by Starlight has a new-behind-the-scenes studio video for their latest single "Invisible", which can be found on their MySpace and MTV profiles. You can vote for them for the MTV Woodie Award at bestmusiconcampus.com.
Sonny learned all he has ever known about music and life at the Governor's School, so his musical and other accomplishments are always indebted to his mentors, friends, and teachers at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities. |

About the Governor's School
The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities gives the artistically talented high school students from all over the state the opportunity to concentrate on their skills in a supportive environment of artistic and academic excellence. Students apply and audition for the school to concentrate in one of five art areas: Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music or Visual Arts.
The nine-month public residential high school is modeled after a master-apprentice community with an arts faculty who are all practicing artists, as well as educators in their areas of expertise. In addition to rigorous pre-professional arts training, students receive an intense and innovative academic education that fosters connections to the arts while meeting all the requirements necessary for a South Carolina high school diploma.
Life at the school is a constant collaboration. Artists from different backgrounds and all five art areas work together, learn from one another and grow to form bonds that last long past graduation. Located in the heart of the arts district of Greenville, SC, the school's community extends well beyond campus and the Upstate of South Carolina to include parents, legislators, private donors, arts organizations and educators throughout the state.
