Kathleen Turner Challenges Emerging Artists to "Be Brave" |
|
Our community had the opportunity to visit with film and theatre actress Kathleen Turner while she was in Greenville on a recent visit to the Upstate. She addressed the entire school community, and answered questions about acting, the film and theatre industries, and activism. Emily Ussery, a senior drama student from Tega Cay expressed, "Kathleen Turner inspired me, as an artist, a person, and as a woman. She helped me realize that we are put on this earth 'to find our how extraordinary we are.' " |

Visual Arts faculty member John Benjamin Gilliam has been selected as a 2007-2008 Individual Artist Fellow by the South Carolina Arts Commission. The fellowship was awarded in the crafts category and recognizes artistic achievement. Selections are made by an independent out-of-state panel based on the artist's portfolio. ATTENTION 9-12 TEACHERS: Announcing a New Fall 2007 ITV Recertification Course
Arts Integration Across the High School Curriculum: An Introduction to Arts Integration
Faculty members from the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, together with SCETV, collaborated on this online course in which examples from Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science classrooms are used to present an introduction to arts integration. The course content progresses from a brief history of arts integration and its rationale through an overview of unique languages of the five areas of the arts (Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music and the Visual Arts). Included are suggested resources teachers can use to integrate these five art areas into their classroom from initial arts integration to the fully-infused curriculum. The course concludes with teaching strategies for meaningful integration and assessment. Email Dana Howard, dhoward@scgsah.state.sc.us with curriculum questions and Bonnie McMurray, mcmurray@scetv.org for registration information.

About the Governor's School
The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities gives the artistically talented high school students from all over the state the opportunity to concentrate on their skills in a supportive environment of artistic and academic excellence. Students apply and audition for the school to concentrate in one of five art areas: Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music or Visual Arts.
A nine-month public residential high school located in downtown Greenville, SC, the school is run much like a college and is modeled as a master-apprentice community with arts faculty who are all practicing, professional artists themselves. In addition to rigorous pre-professional arts training, students receive an intense and innovative academic education that fosters connections to the arts while meeting all the requirements necessary for a South Carolina high school diploma.
Life at the school is a constant collaboration. Artists from different backgrounds and all five art areas work together, learn from one another and grow to form bonds that last long past graduation. Located in the heart of the arts district of Greenville, SC, the school's community extends well beyond campus and the Upstate of South Carolina to include parents, legislators, private donors, arts organizations and teachers throughout the state.
