Issue 5 August 2007
Farewell Dr. Beckie

After dedicating 47 years to education (without a single summer off), our President for the past four years bids us adieu. Dr. Donald Beckie looks forward to a retirement full of travel, working in his wood shop, continuing his outreach efforts with music students in Chester County, golfing and spending time with family and friends in New Jersey, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania and California.

Dr. Beckie received his Bachelor of Music in applied clarinet and music education at the University of the Pacific. There he went on to receive a Masters and Doctorate of Music in applied woodwinds, with minors in music and art history. His teaching career started in the early 60's as a middle school band and orchestra teacher in Hayward, California. He went on to teach music and woodwinds at institutions such as Gettysburg College, Camp de Musique and Susquehanna University. He was the Director of the School of Music at the University of Redlands and spent nineteen years of his career at the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts.

Dr. Beckie joined the Governor's School in 2003, when the school's founding president, Dr. Virginia Uldrick retired. During his time here, the school implemented the Teachers' Institute and the Discovery Summer Program for rising 9th grade students, was recognized both as a top 200 high school by the US News and World Report, and by the College Board as the "World's Best in Music Theory for a School of our Size."

We thank Dr. Beckie for maintaining our school's mission over the last four years and wish him and his wife, Carolyn all the best in retired life and travels.
3 Presidents
The school's three Presidents during the school's opening festivities for faculty and staff on August 15th.  From left to right: Dr. Donald Beckie, retiring; Dr. Bruce Halverson, current; and Dr. Virginia Uldrick, founding.

Welcome Dr. Halverson
As we gear up to start our 2007-2008 school year, we welcome our new President, Dr. Bruce R. Halverson. Dr. Halverson is President Emeritus of Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Prior to that, he was Dean of the School of Theatre at Florida State University, and before that, Head and Artistic Director of the Department of Theatre, University of Illinois - Urbana - Champaign. Dr. Halverson received his Bachelor's Degree in Speech and Drama with Honors from Augustana College, and his Doctorate in Theatre History from the University of Washington.

In commenting on his new position, Dr. Halverson stated that he is "looking forward to being associated with the outstanding students, faculty and administration of the Governor's School. In the relatively short period since the South Carolina Governor's School has been open, it has already gained a national reputation that compares with the best known private art schools in the country. Everyone associated with that should be proud, and I am glad to be joining this team."

Dr. Halverson is moving to the Greenville area with his wife, Nancy, and son, Cole.

About the Governor's School

The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities gives the artistically talented high school students from all over the state the opportunity to concentrate on their skills in a supportive environment of artistic and academic excellence. Students apply and audition for the school to concentrate in one of five art areas: Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts.

A nine-month public residential high school located in downtown Greenville, SC, the school is run much like a college and is modeled as a master-apprentice community with arts faculty who are all practicing, professional artists themselves. In addition to rigorous pre-professional arts training, students receive an intense and innovative academic education that fosters connections to the arts while meeting all the requirements necessary for a South Carolina high school diploma.

Life at the school is a constant collaboration. Artists from different backgrounds and all five art areas work together, learn from one another and grow to form bonds that last long past graduation. Located in the heart of the arts district of Greenville, SC, the school's community extends well beyond campus and the Upstate of South Carolina to include parents, legislators, private donors, arts organizations and teachers throughout the state.
