This has been a whirlwind and most exciting year in which Jose Ciria, one of Spain's most important artists, has had exhibitions traveling throughout Europe and South America and a major show at the Stefan Stux Gallery in Chelsea, which opened February - April to great acclaim. I was fortunate to visit Madrid in November to see Ciria's opening exhibition at the Circulo de Bellas Artes. More than 500 people attended.
In May, I curated an exhibition at the Amarillo Museum of Art, Ciria- Rorschach Heads, the opening of which was filmed and for which I interviewed Ciria for a documentary about his life and work.
Ciria and I traveled in September to Valencia, Spain for a major retrospective at IVAM where the President of Valencia, Alberto Fabra, along with many of Spain's dignitaries were there to see the exhibition, curated by Kara Vander Weg.
The Cordeiros Galeria in Porto, Portugal opened an exhibition, November 5, titled El Mito De Prometeo. If you are in the area please visit the gallery.

One of Spain's Most Important Painters For the Opening of the exhibition at the Amarillo Art Museum, a new catalogue was published, Ciria-Rorschach Heads. Interestingly it is about the heads that Ciria returns to again and again. The paintings are intense and demanding of us, requiring us to confront our fears and anxieties, how we see the world today and how we cope with the situations we find ourselves in. Fear, anxiety, confusion and anger are some of the feelings the paintings emote in us. Jose Manuel Ciria, an artist of international renown, came to New York to open his atelier in 2005. Ciria's recent work, "The Execution of the Soul" Rorschach Heads at the Stux Gallery and Ciria-Rorschach Heads at the Amarillo Museum of Art in Texas, are part of a new body of work within the "heads series". The Rorschach Heads bring a new dimension to Ciria's work, incorporating figuration with abstraction.

In this selection of paintings and drawings Ciria demonstrates a new found visual density with an emphasis on iconography that contrasts with the expressionistic abstraction of his proceeding work.
Ciria's paintings require you to look, to see, to visit and revisit in order to understand his visual language. His paintings are intelligent, demanding and engaging. The texture, colors, size and subject matter require your attention. They, like us, are individual, no two the same, unique and complex. Ciria presents a narrative and we construct our own story based on our engagement with the painting and what we bring in terms of our own personal psychology.
The quality of Ciria's work is ever evolving as he consistently pushes the envelope and himself to new heights.

Through the paintings of Masks and Rorschach Heads, Ciria stakes his place in the world of contemporary art as one of the most internationally important artists and one to be watched with anticipation.
Ciria bares his soul to us if we are brave enough to look, to see, to take the time to understand.

Ciria-Rorschach Heads
"The Painter's Brush consumes his dreams". Yeats
Life is a Rorschach test; it is all in how you see things and what you experience in life.
Ciria's Self Portrait (2010) is a very primitive and spiritual painting and with a palette of primarily red and black, it exudes passion, fury and energy. Ciria's Disturbing Noises (2010) with the eyes and mouth-sewn shut and I Can't Answer (2010) bring to mind Goya's political etchings from Los Caprichos, his comment on human existence, where he draws his subjects

from distorted dreams. In Goya's Etchings as in Ciria's paintings, we can't speak of what we see, our eyes are closed, it's too painful to speak of it, and we are frightened. In Goya's Black Paintings he depicts the mythological Saturn eating his sons. The painting is bizarre and grotesque. Ciria's grotesque painting, "Talkative Paranoiac" shows the same emotion and fear and is unsettling and disturbing. One also references Francis Bacon's Three Studies For Portrait of Lucian Freud and Freud's Self Portrait Reflection full of turmoil and revealing something of the psychology of the artist himself.
