Spring 2009 |

This month was an extremely interesting one. While visiting the art exhibition of Steven Assael at Forum Gallery NYC, I had an opportunity to view his new work. I then went on to visit his studio with poet Fred Feirstein and his wife Linda Feirstein, and art critic James F. Cooper, the author of a new book Knights of the Brush. This book is a must read about the Hudson River School of artists.
As a guest of Dr. Sharon Flescher of IFAR I heard the riveting lecture by Olivier Bernier on Cambodia-Angkor and the Ravages of Time, War and Looting.
Finally, during a very interesting and informative conversation with Sam Green I learned about his current project for Landmarks Foundation- Restoring Sacred Sites, a damaged Synagogue in Morocco. We hope you will find our newsletters interesting and informative. Please feel free to bring to our attention any news that you think our clients would be interested in.
We look forward to a continuing dialogue with you. Free consultations are available upon request. Regards, Carole Newhouse President Newhouse Associates

Steven Assael- Realism in Painting
|
|
Artist-Steven Assael
Steven Assael is a figurative artist whose paintings are thought provoking and unsettling in a most profound way. A visit to Assael's studio provided insight into his private world where one is exposed to meticulously drawn figures, studies for paintings, exotic costumes as well as intimate settings, which enable the artist to place the model in a very dramatic space. Assael's paintings are intelligent and evoke a feeling of unease. He challenges the viewer to engage with the painting on many levels. A great deal of his subjects, although in the same painting are disconnected from one another, they are looking elsewhere and absorbed in another world. Some of his models have piercings evocative of the Native Americans at Sun Dance, a ceremony that includes piercing and the ritual of sacrifice and a celebration of renewal. The painting shown, "Home Bound," was selected as the cover for a new book of poetry titled Fallout by world renowned poet, Frederick Feirstein. Assael currently has an exhibition at Forum Gallery. Olivier Bernier, Lecturer, Author, Vice Chair Center for Khmer Studies speaks on Cambodia-The Ravages of Time, War and Looting The 12th century Khmer temples at Angkor -- architectural marvels and a World Heritage Site -- have been ravaged by years of war, neglect, and systematic looting.
Statues have been wrenched from the monuments, and reliefs have been gouged out. While today, the looting has diminished; the monuments are suffering from a variety of other ills, the environment and many of them the direct result of the government's corruption.
This illustrated talk looked at what remains today -- still more than enough to show that the Khmer's was one of the world's most important cultures. It detailed the process of looting, and examined what is happening right now to this vast archaeological site and to its key museum.

Landmarks Foundation Director Sam Green's current project is the Slat al Qahal Synagogue in Essaourira, Morocco.
The Sacred Sites projects have been many. Sam Green started his career in 1964 as Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he launched the career of Andy Warhol, worked as a cultural consultant to Mayor John Lindsay and during that time curated outdoor sculpture installations including famed Claes Oldenberg's earthwork pit in Central park.
In 1968 he found out about the potential bulldozing of part of Easter Island and was able to arrange to have a Moai head brought to New York and installed on Park Ave upon a pedestal designed by architect Philip Johnson. The feat brought world attention to the potential loss on Easter Island.
His new project the Slat Al Qahal Synagogue in Essouira, Morocco was built in the mid 19th century when Jews comprised 40% of Essaouira's population. Today, few Jews remain.
This synagogue communicates the rich history of coexistence of Jews and Muslims in Morocco and now represents a prime opportunity for cooperation between them. The Slat al Qahal restoration project is a chance both to continue this trajectory of tolerance and to save the history of open-mindedness that has made Morocco the rich and diverse culture it is today.
