If My People . . . Today is election day. An historic event in the history of the United States of America. At the end of today Americans will have elected the nation's first black president or first female vice-president. Our world is changing. But, beyond that, we can see change that feels like turmoil around the globe - war, financial crisis, job loss, all things that provide the undermining of our need for security. We will not find greater security in a new president. We will not find greater security in a $700 billion bail out. We will not find security in knowing our job is safe or our mortgage is secure. At the end of today, with a new president who will prepare to occupy the Oval Office in January, and reconfigurations in congress, after 3 states vote on the issue of abortion, and 3 states vote regarding homosexual marriage, God will still be on the throne. Read that again slowly: God will still be on the throne. Reflect, for a moment on Psalm 71: "For you have been my hope, O Sovereign Lord, my confidence since
my youth. From birth I have relied on you; you brought me forth
from my mother's womb. I will ever praise you. I have become like a
portent to many, but you are my strong refuge. My mouth is filled with
your praise, declaring your splendor all day long. (v. 5-8) The picture the psalmist paints is of God as a rock so solid it cannot be scaled and it cannot be compromised. This safe place is where we can go. It is there we can find our security. God is in control, and part of His control is offering us the safety and security we need . . . in times of war, job loss, and financial crisis. God is on the throne today, and we can trust Him fully. But that is not the only response for today - we also need to pray. II Chronicles 7:14:
"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." For God to bring healing in our time of crisis, we need to humble ourselves, seek Him, and repent and turn back to our Sovereign Lord - trusting Him to act to bring help and healing, personally and as a country. Many will hope that a new president can bring the change we need. Others may hope a new congress can fix our problems ... but our help is in the name of the Lord. We, as God's people, must trust and pray. Why put trust in men and women, when we can trust in the Almighty God? Let's trust God, humble ourselves, seek Him, and pray . . . together!
