A Life Worthwhile . . .

Albert Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist best known for his theory of relativity. It took more than two decades for the majority of scientists to abandon prior thinking and support it. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921.

Most of us will never be that smart. We will never receive a Nobel Prize for our achievements. Many students going back to school this week probably don't want to focus so quickly on physics. Albert Einstein was a man who made a great contribution to our world. His life certainly would be considered worthwhile.

But I find it very interesting what he said about living a life that could be considered worthwhile. He said:

"Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile."

Such a statement causes me to reflect - Is my life worthwhile? How about you . . . Is your life worthwhile? Am I raising my children to make contributions with their lives that are worthwhile? Am I helping them to understand that this kind of worthwhile is the only kind of life that is worth it?

Before Albert Einstein we have the life of Jesus Christ. His words in John 13:15 give me a greater challenge and reason to live a worthwhile life:

"I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you."

Jesus said this right after he washed the disciples' feet in the Upper Room. It was right before He would end up on the cross. It was prior to giving His life as the only worthy sacrifice for us.

Life can easily be centered on me: my needs, my desires, my plans, my accomplishments. I continue to need Jesus' example to help me move beyond me; to do more than live a life that is worth the time I'm investing in it, and cultivating a life that is truly worthwhile - one that willingly is given for others.

How can you live a worthwhile life this week?

Together in the Cause,

Tom De Vries
