Hello!

Lisa Haneberg, here. Welcome to the second quarterly edition of Lead Well. In this newsletter, you will find information and tools you can use to help build your management and leadership capacity. I welcome feedback, so please drop me a line with your thoughts. And if you think the newsletter offers value, please pass it along.
SENIOR LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE
Do you know the reputation you have created? You should! You want to know!

By Lisa Haneberg

We have worked with and coached many executives. The most common derailing factors (weaknesses or issues that have the potential to derail your career) are those related to style, personality, and communications. In other words, some execs are not easy to work with! You do not want to be the person that causes people to cringe when they hear they need to work with you.

Seriously, you have a reputation, but do you have the self-awareness to know what it is? Everyone else knows, and you don't want to be the last one to know what's getting in the way of your ability to optimize impact and results.

ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE PART 2
Want This? Do That.

By Lisa Haneberg

Last quarter, I shared a white paper on Organizational Culture. If you missed it, you can download it here.

In this edition, I am sharing a quick and easy tool I created ("Want This? Do That.") to help bring home a very important point for managers and leaders - YOU CREATE THE CULTURE AND YOU CAN CHANGE THE CULTURE.

This is an easy tool to use and it packs a punch. I would recommend you take 45-60 minutes and go through it with your management team(s). Here are the simple facilitation instructions.
  1. Hand out page 1 of the "Want This? Do That." tool. Ask groups of 5-7 to select five cultural elements that they would most like to see become stronger in your organization.
  2. Once each group is finished getting to their top five, hand out pages 2-3. Ask each group to circle the items in the "do this" column for the five cultural elements they selected. Ask each group to present their five elements and the items they need to do to build that culture.
  3. If there is time, ask each group to self-assess how well they do the items in the "do this" column for their top five cultural elements and ways they can build these activities into their daily and weekly managerial regimens.

It is that simple. Download the PDf of the tool here.
HIP AND SAGE
hipsagecoverAre you hip and sage?

By Lisa Haneberg

I am pleased to let you all know that my newest book, Hip and Sage: Staying Smart, Cool, and Competitive in the Workplace, is out and available. Pick up your copy at Amazon.com here. I will be doing a bunch of talks about what it means to be hip and sage, so let me know if you would like me to speak at your organization. Here is a brief excerpt from the book.

Preface

My friend Leigh asked me what started my interest in and journey toward becoming (and staying) hip and sage. Here is the story I shared with her:

I attended a Fast Company magazine readers network meeting in late 2004. The small group of about eight professionals struck me as being smart, curious, and interesting. I sat near Lori, a sales consultant, and Curt, a "passion catalyst," who were talking about their blogs (weblogs). I wondered what a blog was. I heard them use words and phrases such as permalinks, trackbacks, and Carnival of the Capitalists, as they discussed strategies for building blog readership.

OUR WEBINARS
We launched a series of webinars last quarter and we have learned a few things. First, many organizations are looking to use online training methods to reduce travel costs and the interest in webinars is booming. Second, most of our contacts and clients prefer private webinars (just for their employees) versus public webinars. Also, we learned that many of you are reporting that your managers and leaders are increasingly comfortable with the webinar format for learning.

Our OD team has been doing webinars for years and we are pretty darned good at it, if we do say so ourselves. :-). So let us know if you would like us to provide a series of webinars for your managers and leaders to augment or replace the other in-person training programs might provide.  Here are a few sample topics we train on:
  • Employee Engagement
  • High Impact Middle Management
  • Coaching
  • Project Management
  • Senior Team Effectiveness
  • Process Improvement

Also, if you are interested in setting up an internal training and development social network for your organization, give us a call.
