Greetings!

Despite the heat, Fall is certainly on the way. How do we know? School's back in session, our first home football game is Saturday and our beer section is stocked with Ocktoberfest and Harvest ales. With Fall, we've got lots to celebrate - certainly that we made it through a blistering Summer and we can rejoice to those cool nights and temperate days promised in the upcoming weeks.

We're starting September with a virtual tasting - a Smack Down between two great varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo. Read more in the article below. The battle will rage all day Thursday and you'll name the winner!
Come and join us.

With 5 home football games in the next five weeks, please think of Sun Singer for all your tailgating supplies - from Bloody Mary mix, to all your favorite wine and beer, plus our Gourmet Deli with all the makings for great snacks and sandwiches. Nothing less than the best for our friends and yours!

Here's a salute to all those patio days still left to enjoy and big hopes for a winning season for this year's Fighting Illini.

Thursday, September 1st:

Cabernet v. Tempranillo Smackdown

No one can understand how these two champions came to occupy the same September 1st virtual celebration date. At Sun Singer, we don't think there's enough room even in virtual reality for these heavyweights to share - so we want you to decide who gets the day!

Step into the Ring: We're put these contenders head-to-head for you to taste and then leave the details to you. Using hashtags #CabernetDayand #TempranilloDay @Sun_Singer, you can tell the world about the ultimate triumph and which wine will claim the day as its own.

Join us all day September 1st and help decide

the fate of these varietal giants!

"Twitter Taste" Special:

2 ounces of each wine for $10

Melka 'CJ' Cabernet Sauvignon '08, Napa Valley, California

The 2008 CJ Cabernet is ripe with blueberry, black currant and black cherry jamminess. On the nose there is a hint of anise and black pepper, which appears again on the back of the palate. Its fine-grain tannins add texture while oak-influence adds a caramel flavor to the wine's medium length finish.

Vinas del Cenit Tempranillo '04, Toro, Spain

Deep purple in color with aromatic intensity of graphite, blackberries, blueberries, and spice box. Rich and full-bodied but with a superb touch of elegance and restraint. Flavors of chocolate and raspberries explode on the palate, with a good deal of acidity and tannin adding to complexity. Outstanding!!

                          2 ounce   $6.00         5 ounce   $12.00

New to Virtual Tastings?

Here's how to participate

A number of virtual wine tastings will occur online over the next few weeks and there's lots of opportunities to discover new and exciting wines: #CabernetDay & #TempranilloDay (both Sept 1st), and #Grenache Day (Sept 25th).

Those of us who have been tasting and tweeting for a while know how these events work, but if you're new to virtual wine tastings or have never been brave enough to talk about wine online, here's a few tips to get you started and answers to some of the most common questions I receive ...»

Late Summer Splash: Vinho Verde
Vinho Verde is a Portuguese wine from the Minho region in the far north of the country. The name literally means "Green Wine" (red, white or rose), referring to its youthful freshness rather than its color.

The "Vinho Verde Region" was demarcated by the law of September 18, 1908 and a decree of October 1 of the same year. The regulations controlling production were largely set in 1929, with recognition as a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC) in 1984. ....»

Back to School: Wine Tasting Basics

Nearly every Saturday during our weekly wine tasting, customers will ask us to explain the proper technique for tasting wine. While wine tasting rating systems range from a simple - "I love it!" or "I hate it!" to more complicated 100 point scales,

if your overall goals include getting acquainted with a variety of  wine regions and the ability to select a bottle that you'll enjoy from a wine list, ...»
