Thornberry Custom Builders Inc. Newsletter
SEPTEMBER 2012
Greetings!

Wow, football already?  Where did Summer go?  Well, hopefully we are on the down TJ Thornberryside of the hurricane season as well as the heat.

It's Associate appreciation month at the Charlotte Desoto Building Industry Association (CDBIA) and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our dedicated Associates for the great products and services they have provided us over the years.

If you need specific trade services I strongly encourage you to reference the CDBIA member directory at www.cdbia.com for a comprehensive list of quality providers.  All CDBIA members must be properly licensed and are held to a high standard and code of ethics in order to be a member.

Sincerely,

Industry News,
Thoughts for Home Owners
From TJ

Last month we featured the start of a new home that we're building at 224 Harvey Street in Punta Gorda.

This house is a two story wood frame craftsman style home. As we mentioned in August, craftsman style homes have spacious front porches with distinctive square pillars. The interiors feature built-in cabinets, nooks, seating, shelving and stained wood trim.

We've come quite a ways since last month. As you can see from the photos on the right, the second floor, roof and windows have been completed and exterior weatherization has been started. It's really starting to look like the elevation drawing.

In the back yard, Nautilus Pools has started construction of the swimming pool. The shell is complete and waiting for the finishes.

Inside the house, our plumber, Charlotte Plumbing, has been busy installing the Manabloc system. The Manabloc distribution system is an efficient way to distribute water throughout the home for a quicker temperature response to each fixture. By having a dedicated line directly to each fixture, it also allows the home owner to shut off individual hot & cold lines to each fixture (when necessary) rather than the whole house.

Check in next month for the rest of the story!

Home Owner Tip of The Month:

Hire Properly Licensed Contractors

I have received an unusual amount of calls lately regarding unpermitted work and unlicensed activity.  It so happens that the CDBIA featured a forum at it's latest membership meeting having a representative from Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) and our County Code Enforcement office.  Although this is and will always be an on-going battle to curb unlicensed activity, we are making progress at the local and State levels to give the laws some real "teeth".  One of our biggest hurdles for enforcement locally is the Sheriff and District Attorney.  I will be very interested to see what and how our new Sheriff elect handles this issue vs. the past.

Anyway, so my house tip of the month is this...so many times, the money you think you are saving by hiring a Handy Man, a neighbor, or a relative is lost to shoddy work, re-doing the work altogether with a licenses professional, and or Code Enforcement liens when the unpermitted work is later found to not meet the current codes and regulations.  This seems to happen most with window and door replacements since the code has changed regarding wind and design pressure requirements.

Remember, by law...a handy man is not even allowed to paint in this County.  They are limited to changing locks, light bulbs, screens...just to name a few.

What's new with the Thornberry's.......

Jessica and I attended the Smuggler's Foundation's fund raiser concert with The Boogiemen at the Cultural Center recently. Although the proceeds did go to the Smuggler's Foundation, the event was planned as a surprise 60th birthday party for our local celebrity Mike Riley.

What a great evening and kudos to Juli Riley for arranging the "entertainment" which consisted of several of Mike's close friends giving him a "roast".  Mike was my K-5 PE coach at Meadow Park Elementary....I can't help but still call him "Coach Riley".  My favorite memories are the parachute that he would have us run underneath and of course the rock concerts he would put on for us at the school.

Happy Birthday Mike!
