________________________________________ The 9th Annual Reading Power Read-a-thon FAQ's for Central School
*Please note corrected Dragon Den dates in red
Reading Power Read-a-thon runs January 13th to 27th, 2012. For parents who are not familiar
with Reading Power or those who just need a refresher, here are some answers to frequently
asked questions.
What is the Reading Power Read-a-thon? The Reading Power Read-a-thon is School-Force's
second largest annual fundraising event, which at the same time encourages the love of reading.
During these two weeks, students can both raise money for School-Force and have fun reading.
Why is there a dragon on the wall? This year's theme is "Fired Up with Reading!" Elementary students in Grades 1-5 can earn dragon scales to place them on the dragon to help it grow.
How can my child get the scales? Between January 13th and January 27th, students write down the time they spend reading on the Reading Power reading log each day. *Grades K and 1 can also
count minutes read to them. (Please note: audiobook minutes do not count for reading log.) For
every 100 minutes read, your child earns one scale for the dragon. (The reading log, the pledge
form and instruction flyer are in a large white envelope called the "Read-A-Thon Packet", which
was distributed on January 13, 2012.)
When and where can my child get the scales? Your child can bring his/her reading log with the
parent's initials on each line to the school to claim the scales & glue them on the dragon.
Central's Dragon Den will be open at morning recess on Wednesday, January 18th , Friday, January 20th, Wednesday, January 25th and Friday, January 27th .
How can my Kindergarten student participate? Central Kindergarteners bring their reading logs
directly to their teachers and will receive a colorful paper dolphin for every 100 minutes read.
What is the 1,000 Minute Club? If your child reads 1,000 minutes or more during these two weeks, he/she is in the 1,000 Minute Club. A cool prize will be awarded to the 1,000 Minute Club
members at the Awards Assembly in March. Please make sure to turn in the reading log and
pledge form with at least one donation in the Reading Power Packet.
Why should my child participate in the Read-a-thon? There are many reasons...here are just a few:
1. The Read-a-thon is a fun event that both students and parents can help raise money for School-Force, our school district's education foundation.
2. Money raised will help maintain the quality education in our schools. 3. By participating, your child's class can win a smoothie party.
4. By participating, your child can be the Top Class Reader or Top Fundraiser and win a
prize.
5. *New* Chance to win great raffle prizes for participants raising $150 or more in donations.
Did you know? Last year, Belmont-Redwood Shores students read over 1.5 million minutes and raised over $217,000 for School-Force. Those funds are helping to support libraries, reading
specialists and many other programs this year.
How can I donate? You can be a sponsor and pledge either a flat amount or by minutes read. Please write check payable to School-Force or donate online at http://schoolforce.org/
Although parents may want to support their children's reading efforts, School-Force, while welcoming all donations, encourages parents to make their primary investment in the main Annual Giving
Campaign.
Can my family and friends be my child's sponsors? Absolutely! In fact, Reading Power is meant as a way to reach beyond our families with students in our district. Students are encouraged to ask grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and neighbors to make a pledge for their
reading efforts and help keep our schools great! Many friends and family find this is the perfect
way to encourage your child's academic success and also show they care by supporting your child's school.
