A Message from Our PTA President

sarina

Read-a-Thon is On!

The School-Force Read-a-Thon is ON as of Friday, January 13th for our Central students. This is a time to get out those books and eBooks to promote reading and literacy. To kick off the two week event, Gary T. and his Poet Tree performed in a PTA sponsored assembly. His fun and exciting poems filled the multiuse room after an introduction of the Read-a-Thon from Lisa Meltzer Penn and Julie Shubert. The students laughed and participated, and quite a few teachers had a chuckle too.

If you would like to know more about the assembly please feel free to visit http://www.garyturchin.com to find out about the performance and to hear some of the poems experienced on Friday by your student.

Happy Reading!

Sarina Hamer

The 9th Annual Reading Power Read-a-thon FAQ's for Central School
*Please note corrected Dragon Den dates in red

Reading Power Read-a-thon runs January 13th to 27th, 2012. For parents who are not familiar
with Reading Power or those who just need a refresher, here are some answers to frequently
asked questions.

What is the Reading Power Read-a-thon?
The Reading Power Read-a-thon is School-Force's

second largest annual fundraising event, which at the same time encourages the love of reading.
During these two weeks, students can both raise money for School-Force and have fun reading.

Why is there a dragon on the wall?
This year's theme is "Fired Up with Reading!" Elementary
students in Grades 1-5 can earn dragon scales to place them on the dragon to help it grow.

How can my child get the scales?
Between January 13th and January 27th, students write down the
time they spend reading on the Reading Power reading log each day. *Grades K and 1 can also
count minutes read to them. (Please note: audiobook minutes do not count for reading log.) For
every 100 minutes read, your child earns one scale for the dragon. (The reading log, the pledge
form and instruction flyer are in a large white envelope called the "Read-A-Thon Packet", which
was distributed on January 13, 2012.)

When and where can my child get the scales?
Your child can bring his/her reading log with the

parent's initials on each line to the school to claim the scales & glue them on the dragon.
Central's Dragon Den will be open at morning recess on Wednesday, January 18th , Friday, January 20th, Wednesday, January 25th and Friday, January 27th .

How can my Kindergarten student participate?
Central Kindergarteners bring their reading logs

directly to their teachers and will receive a colorful paper dolphin for every 100 minutes read.

What is the 1,000 Minute Club?
If your child reads 1,000 minutes or more during these two
weeks, he/she is in the 1,000 Minute Club. A cool prize will be awarded to the 1,000 Minute Club
members at the Awards Assembly in March. Please make sure to turn in the reading log and
pledge form with at least one donation in the Reading Power Packet.

Why should my child participate in the Read-a-thon?
There are many reasons...here are just a few:

1. The Read-a-thon is a fun event that both students and parents can help raise money for
School-Force, our school district's education foundation.
 2. Money raised will help maintain the quality education in our schools.
3. By participating, your child's class can win a smoothie party.

4. By participating, your child can be the Top Class Reader or Top Fundraiser and win a
prize.
5. *New* Chance to win great raffle prizes for participants raising $150 or more in donations.

Did you know?
Last year, Belmont-Redwood Shores students read over 1.5 million minutes and
raised over $217,000 for School-Force. Those funds are helping to support libraries, reading
specialists and many other programs this year.

How can I donate?
You can be a sponsor and pledge either a flat amount or by minutes read.
Please write check payable to School-Force or donate online at http://schoolforce.org/

Although
parents may want to support their children's reading efforts, School-Force, while welcoming all
donations, encourages parents to make their primary investment in the main Annual Giving
Campaign.

Can my family and friends be my child's sponsors? Absolutely! In fact, Reading Power is meant as a way to reach beyond our families with students in our district. Students are encouraged to ask grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and neighbors to make a pledge for their
reading efforts and help keep our schools great! Many friends and family find this is the perfect
way to encourage your child's academic success and also show they care by supporting your child's school.

Happy Reading! And let's all get Fired Up with Reading!

Central PTA's

Banana Seed Book Fair

is coming soon!

banana seed

Friday, January 27, 2012 from 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

(in conjunction with the Ice Cream Social)

and

Monday, January 30, 2012 through Wednesday, February 1, 2012

During recess and lunch breaks.

Parents are welcome to shop during the recess and lunch breaks as well as during our extended parent shopping hours: 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM on Monday and Tuesday and 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM on Wednesday.

During this year's Book Fair, you will have the opportunity to donate a special gift to your child's classroom--the gift of a book.

In an effort to provide richer learning environments for our students, our teachers submit wish lists of books they would like for each of their classrooms. Since your gift becomes part of the classroom's permanent library collection, each donation enriches the education of future children for years to come. Every gift will be recognized with a bookplate identifying your family as the benefactor. Please look for the Classroom Wish List display or ask a volunteer for assistance.

Lastly, we need VOLUNTEERS to make this happen! Please consider signing up for a volunteer slot through the online sign up list by clicking the following link. If the link does not work, please copy and paste into your browser window.

                    Art-in-Action

The kids in Ms. Coney's Room 9 bring much enthusiasm and creativity to each Art in Action session. This year's lessons started by going all the way back to the beginning of Art History and learning about cave paintings. They made a virtual visit on the Web to the Lascaux Caves in France, learned how to draw animals from simple shapes and made their own cave art. First, they made their own paintings in the classroom. Then, they worked together outdoors on a cave mural using charcoal, clay slip "paint" and twig paintbrushes.

Next, they learned about the proportions of the face. First, by making colorful
cut paper collages in the spirit of Paul Klee, then, the next month by making relief
sculptures in clay after learning about Paul Rubens and local sculptor Rob Browne.

This month they will learn about American folk artist Nellie Mae Rowe and
make a drawing inspired by her work.
