 A Message from our Principal
Dear Parents, I hope all of you had a glorious, restful winter break and can look forward to a truly Happy New Year. It is hard to believe how quickly we have reached the New Year and yet how much we still want to do. January is a good time to reflect on the past year. It is also a great opportunity for a fresh start. With that in mind, I would like to extend an invitation to each of you to become involved in your child's school day. We are proud of our exceptional parent volunteers and invite you to join us. It is rewarding to help and to see up close the remarkable job our teachers are doing. It also is a revelation to experience the responsibility teachers have in meeting all the needs of children, especially with the current 25:1 student/teacher ratio. Your talents and interests can make valuable contributions to your child and to all the students at Central. For more information please call us at school at 637-4820. We love our volunteers and will welcome you aboard! And speaking of volunteers, the Reading Power Team is launching our annual Reading Power Read-a-Thon this week with a terrific Kick-off Assembly. It will feature a well known author and artist, Gary Turchin presenting "Gary T. and the Poet Tree." This year's Read-a-Thon extends from January 13-27 and is a wonderful chance to support School Force. This is a feel-good fundraiser because it involves our students and benefits them, as well as our foundation. Watch for the Read-a-Thon packets which will be coming home with information about the upcoming activities and incentives. Among the activities is Family Reading Night. It is on Wednesday January 18 at 7:00 in our School Library with one of our teachers as a special guest reader. Welcome all! On the following Wednesday, January 25th, the Belmont Public Library is inviting Central students and their parents to a Reading Power Pajama Night. It will be held in the Fireside area in the back of the library from 7:00-8:00 P.M. Everyone is invited to come in their pjs. Ellie Anderson, the Children's Librarian, will be reading, as well as one of our own celebrity teachers. There will be snacks and a special raffle provided. All children attending can add 60 minutes to their Reading Power reading logs. Please consider walking or carpooling and allow time for parking, as parking lot spaces are limited. This is not a drop off event and adult supervision is required. We are hoping that a lot of our Central Dolphins can attend. Please remember that next Monday, January 16, there is no school as we commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We have talked with our students about the values Dr. King stood for and the way he taught the world by his example. He is an important reminder of the value of tolerance and respect. We remind our kids that the best way we can honor this great human being is to be kind and to respect one another. Warmest regards, Cori McKenzie |

School-Force The 9th Annual Reading Power Read-a-thon
Dates: January 13-27th, 2012

For many parents who are not familiar with Reading Power, here are some answers to frequently asked questions.
What is the Reading Power Read-a-thon?
The Reading Power Read-a-thon is School-Force's second largest annual fundraising event, which at the same time encourages the love of reading. During these two weeks, student can both raise money for School-Force and have fun reading.
Why is there a dragon on the wall?
This year's theme is "Fired Up with Reading!" Elementary students in Grades 1-5 can earn dragon scales to place them on the dragon to help it grow.
How can my child get the scales?
Between January 13th to January 27th, students write down the time they spend reading on the reading log each day. The reading can be by themselves or for grades K and 1, they can be read to. For every 100 minutes read, your child earns one scale for the dragon. (The reading log, the pledge form and instruction flyer are in a large white envelope called the "Read-A-Thon Packet", which will be distributed on January 13, 2012.)
When and where can my child get the scales?
Your child can bring his/her reading log with the parent's initials on each line to the school to claim the scales & glue them on the dragon. Central's Dragon Den will be open at morning recess on Monday, January 18th , Wednesday, January 21st , Monday, January 25th and Wednesday, January 28th .
How can my Kindergarten student participate? Central Kindergarteners bring their reading logs directly to their teachers and will receive a colorful paper dolphin for every 100 minutes read.
What is the 1,000 Minute Club?
If your child reads 1,000 minutes or more during these two weeks, he/she is in the 1,000 Minute Club. A small prize will be awarded to the 1,000 Minute Club members at the Awards Assembly in March. Please make sure to turn in the reading log and pledge form with at least one donation in the Reading Power Packet.
Why should my child participate in the Read-a-thon?
- The Read-a-thon is a fun event that both students and parents can help raise money for School-Force, our school district's education foundation.
- Money raised will help maintain the quality education in our schools.
- By participating, your child's class can win a smoothie party.
- By participating, your child can be the Top Class Reader or Top Fundraiser and win a prize.
- *New* Chance to win great raffle prizes for participants raising $150 or more in donations.
Did you know?
Last year, Belmont-Redwood Shores students read over 1.5 million minutes and raised over $217,000 for School-Force. Those funds are helping to support libraries, reading specialists and many other programs this year.
How can I donate? You can be a sponsor and pledge either a flat amount or by minutes read. Please write check payable to School-Force or donate online at http://schoolforce.org/
Although parents may want to support their children's reading efforts, School-Force, while welcoming all donations, encourages parents to make their primary investment in the main Annual Giving Campaign.
Can my family and friends be my child's sponsors?
Absolutely! In fact, Reading Power is meant as a way to reach beyond our families with students in our district. Students are encouraged to ask grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and neighbors to make a pledge for their reading efforts and help keep our schools great! Many friends and family find this is the perfect way to encourage your child's academic success and also show they care by supporting your child's school.

Art-In-Action
Today we studied this masterpiece by Maurice Utrillo, entitled "Street in the Suburbs" (early 1900's). Building on our theme of "perspectives in art", we discussed the techniques Utrillo used to give us a sense of depth in a picture painted on a flat canvas. The major technique used is "vanishing point perspective" and the children explained how the road we are looking along is probably the same width in the foreground as it is in the distance, even though it is drawn as a pair of lines. As we looked around the picture some more we saw more and more lines converging on this "vanishing point" far away. We talked about other techniques Utrillo uses to convey depth; objects in the foreground obscuring those behind, more distant objects appearing to be smaller, less detailed and even fainter than those closer up. We talked about how many times he must have tried to pain this sort of scene and messed it up before he figured it out and got it right, and how lucky we were to be able to learn his tricks from him and apply them ourselves.
That was all very well but of course the fun part was for the children to make their own masterpieces. I think you'll agree that they came out very well! These were drawn using oil pastels, which are always fun to use because you can blend colors together, smudge them with fingers to make things vague or fainter, or scratch them with a toothpick to create detail.
