A Message from
Principal Cori McKenzie

Dear Parents,

I want to thank everyone connected with the magnificent evening of fun at our annual Auction/Dinner DanceNovember 12th at the Domenico Winery.

It was a huge crowd pleaser from the Central "Uncorked" theme to the beautiful venue and table settings, great food, outstanding array of gifts and services available for auction and the wonderful turn out. It was especially nice to see so many Kindergarten parents and new faces in attendance. We are grateful to have so many parents who contributed to make this a successful event. I especially want to thank co-chairs, Grete Fry and Pam Bell along with the many others who shared their talent and countless hours of their time. The very best part of this event is that all of our students reap the benefits. BRAVO, PTA!!

I also want to commend you for your full participation in our annual Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences. We have such a strong connection between home and school, and one indicator is your attendance at your child's conference. We can't thank you enough for the gifts of your time and interest.

Wishing you all a warm and wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

Cori McKenzie

A Message from Sarina Hamer
PTA President

Hello Central Parents,

We are at a lucky time of year when we can take a moment to reflect on what we've accomplished and be thankful for what we enjoy. This is a moment for me to be thankful for everything that the Central community gives to my children. So in advance, THANK YOU!

Looking out last Saturday night at all the parents with our finery and smiles, it gave me a sense of pride to be a small part of such a wonderful community. Central Elementary is a great school because of the parents who give so much every day to all of our children.

The dinner dance and auction is a big fundraiser for the PTA during the year and it is a fun night. 'Uncorked' was an evening filled with fun and friends and kudos go to Grete Fry and Pam Bell for all that they and their team did to put together a perfect evening. Thank you!

But I don't want pass up an opportunity to note that there are many who work tirelessly in the classrooms, organizing the Back to School BBQ (thank you, Sandra Cheung & Grete Fry), the Innisbrook Gift Wrap Fundraiser (Senta Colombo), Bingo night (thank you, Suzy Mathers), the Book Nook (thank you, Bettina Oelke), and soon Skate Night and Discovery Day all while driving on fieldtrips and working full or part time. The time spent weekly putting together the Central Scoop is invaluable to our community, thank you, Jill and Stephanie. Each one of you, your help is appreciated and you are true stars. Thank you!

To the parents who gave at the beginning of the school year to the PTA so selflessly, the parents who sold wrapping paper to friends, family and co-workers, (yet another year), to support the PTA, and to the parents who give up their time to be with all of our children at school and on fieldtrips or teaching art or music. Thank you! Your time, effort and funds all help to provide programs at Central through the PTA.

This year the PTA is serving our children with Art in Action, Music instruction, updated technology in the computer lab and in the classrooms, assemblies, parent education, classroom supplies, and extra academic support afterschool to name a few. The board works hard to be sure that events run smoothly and service the needs of the community. I am proud to be part of this group and want to thank them for their hard work that is well done, Thank you!

Parents work hard to be sure their children finish homework, keep everything organized, are groomed appropriately, schedule play dates and pack healthy lunches daily. We all deserve a pat on the back, and in coming together to have fun it allows us a chance to celebrate our successes. Thank you for all that YOU do as parents for your children, the community and the PTA.

It is never too late to join the PTA. Just let us know.

Thank you Central Elementary Parents! You ROCK!

Thank you

Thank you again to everyone who was involved in making this a night to remember!
It was a wonderful party!

Congratulations and thank you to Grete Fry, Pam Bell and your entire team for a fantastic evening!

The Central 'Uncorked' 2011 silent auction started strong at 6pm with parents perusing the items up for bid and enjoying appetizers and drinks before dinner. The silent bidding heated up during the first hour and just before the first items closed bidding was frenzied!  The last items to close were those offered by our wonderful teachers. When all the tables were closed, parents checked out their favorite items to see if the bid they placed won. Dinner was served and enjoyed with the live fun starting as Mr. Metro, emcee extraordinaire, teased out the best items for the live auction. Bidders fought for the best parking place on campus, time up in the mountains, and backstage tours at a local television newscast. Laughs and cheers erupted as the Margarita Madness bidding started, all the bidders clearly looking forward to the next time all they could all be together in the same room. Once the live auction concluded, everyone enjoyed dessert and coffee, good conversation and a few even tore up the dance floor!

The PTA silent auction is organized each year in the hopes of raising money so that our Central PTA can offer services and programs such as Art-in-Action, field trips, music and dance instruction, improve student technology services, and provide classroom materials that are used daily. However, the auction is also a celebration of our Central community and each year it's a great time to get together and support the wonderful children we are all raising together.

If you missed the fun, there are still amazing items online for purchase and all proceeds go towards this year's budget for the PTA. You can find great gifts for the holidays or great date night ideas (see PTA news for more specifics). Be sure to take a look!

Calling All Bakers!

The Central Holiday Gift Workshop is coming up on Saturday, December 3rd.  And what goes better with crafting than tasty, homemade baked goods?  We need bakers (beginners to experts) to donate a variety of treats to our bake sale table.  Are you up for it?  We need everything from simple chocolate chip cookies and rice krispy treats to your top-secret banana bread (or other family favorite).  An online sign-up is being created to streamline the process.  Please email Dawn Richards (dawn.richards@mac.com) if you are interested in helping or have questions.

Not a baker?  We also need helpers to set-up and do the selling for a 1-2 hour shift (anytime between10am-2pm).  And don't forget to stop by the Bake Sale table to pick up some treats to take home!  We'll even have small bags and boxes perfect for transporting your yummy purchases.

We had an extra special visitor in the Central Library last week. Kit Kat the guinea pig came by to say HI to the kids for a day! Kit Kat is a little shy so she stayed in her cage. She is a female and she eats hay. Kit Kat belongs to Andrew Marks, a 5th grader in Mrs. Hanau's class. He stayed with her during recess to answer questions the kids had. You may have noticed your child's library book last week was about guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils or rats. Now you know why!

GP

Our kindergarteners learned about "fables". They are stories usually told by animals that teach a lesson. We read THE LION AND THE MOUSE and the lesson was:  Even the strongest can sometimes use the help of the smallest. Our 4th graders checked out books for their marine animal reports. The 5th graders checked out books for their Native American reports.

Thanks to all of you who donated books to the Children's Book Project in San Francisco. We do the Book Drive every year so if you missed it this year bring them in next year.

Happy Thanksgiving and remember...don't take your library books on vacation with you!

Mrs. Branscum
