September 2012 Newsletter
September, Already? Where does the time go?

It seems like just yesterday that I was writing to announce the arrival of August and all the humidity that goes along with it. Just a blink, and it's September already. These days, it is very hard to even imagine my days as a kid when the Minnesota summers seemed to last forever. How nice it would be to have just one of those summers again (but, they can keep the winters).

Today is Labor Day and we are almost fully booked once again. Finally, after several years of slowed tourism, decreased rentals, and a depressed economy, the signs are clear that we are on the road to recovery. People are spending money. They are going out to eat again and there really is a feeling of relief in the air. Now, if we can just get past this humidity... life will be nearly perfect once again. And, that's just a month away.

Sales continue to be strong but we do still have a couple great deals left. Believe me when I tell you that we are definitely on the upswing and prices are slowly moving higher. The bottom has come and gone and the lower priced units are being sold but the listings are not being replaced. The law of supply and demand will soon kick in due to our shrinking inventory of condos for sale and then we'll see more price increases.

If you are thinking of investing here at the Sonoran Resorts, sooner is better than later because things really are a-changin'.

You can see all of our listings by going to our website:

Have a great month and, as always, please don't hesitate to contact me if I can help you with anything at all. I'm always here for you.

Sincerely,

Jim Ringquist

What Have You Experienced in Rocky Point that You'd Like to Share with Others?

Our contest has gotten off to a slow start and I want to personally invite each of you who love Rocky Point to write about one of your experiences. Don't worry, you don't need to be a professional writer. Your chances of winning are good as we have relatively few entries.

Did you catch a sea bass that was bigger than your imagination? Did you get closer to a 600 pound dolphin than you ever dreamed you would? Did you taste the most delicious shrimp taco that you've ever put into your mouth? Did you start out on one of those "ordinary" evenings with family and/or friends when, before you knew it, you'd experienced a delicious meal, tossed down a couple of Margaritas that you didn't know could be made so tasty and were dancing the Salsa to a perfect band in a perfect atmosphere as everyone around cheered you on, then walked outside under the stars of a perfect night with the person you knew you were going to be with for the rest of your life?

Those are the evenings, the mornings, the days, the sunsets that romantic Rocky Point gives us practically year around.  Take one of those experiences and write about it to share with those less fortunate to have had the occasion to visit our wonderland of great times.

And, who knows, like we've said before, if it was a great adventure for you, it will be enjoyed by many others as well, and you might just find yourself the winner of our travel writing contest called "The Best Job in the World", where, as a travel writer on a two week assignment you'll be able to write even more about the romance and adventures to be found in Rocky Point. You'll be paid $50 a day and provided luxurious ocean front accommodations at the phenomenal Sonoran Sky Resort Condominiums.

Go ahead. Write down that great time you had on the beach, on the sea, or on the dance floor. Give us an enticing description of just how it all took place in 1,000 words or less.  People will love it. You'll get it published with a byline, and that could start something truly exciting for you, up to and including a whole new career if you want it!

Insistence on Flights for Hermosillo - Puerto Peasco - Las Vegas Route
by Jose Antonio Perez

Connecting Puerto Peasco to tourism by air is fundamental in strengthening the area, as well as for projects underway including the Convention Center and cruise ship Home Port. Therefore, steps are being taken to attract Aeromxico flights along the Hermosillo-Puerto Peasco-Las Vegas route, affirms Hctor Vsquez del Mercado, President of the local Convention and Visitors Bureau (OCV).

Vsquez del Mercado indicated while they have successfully received support from the State Government, as well as from the airline itself, in order to ensure the flights they now need to collect an additional $250,000 USD, which corresponds to private businesses in the city.

He detailed they have already obtained approximately $200,000 USD to promote the flight, the State Government has contributed part of the fund to guarantee the flights themselves, and they even have Aeromxico on board as a partner for this route.

The OCV President expressed the next step is for the private sector of Peasco to participate directly through a contribution of some sort, as the hotel companies alone cannot provide the $250,000 USD still lacking.
He emphasized the intent is that this aerial connection not depend on official subsidies in order to sustain itself, as in the end the benefit it will create is for everyone and will allow for the consolidation of other projects including the convention center and home port.

Vsquez del Mercado underscored acquiring the Aeromxico flight along the Hermosillo-Peasco-Las Vegas route is currently the OCV's principal project. He expressed the goal is to be able to sign an agreement with the airline in October this year, in order to begin flights along the planned route as early as 2013, tentatively by February.
Summer Tourism Season Closes Out with 23% Growth in Hotel Occupancy Rates

by

Calculations of more than 400,000 summer visitors

The summer tourism season in Puerto Peasco came to a close with an average 23% growth rate in hotel occupancy, representing visits by more than 400,000 people and an economic boost of nearly 18 million dollars, reported Hctor Vsquez del Mercado, President of the Convention and Visitors Bureau (OCV).

The OCV President stated during the seven weeks registering the highest tourism influx, between June and August, they registered an average rental of 66% of available spaces in area establishments, topping out at 75% during the month of July.
The positive difference is noticeable, both for national as well as foreign tourism, as in 2010 the summer closed out with average rates of 48%, and 51% in 2011.

The OCV representative stressed this shows that tourism continues to be Puerto Peasco's principal economic activity, detailing that of the 18 million dollars brought in, 40% of this was for hotels, another 40% for food and beverages, and the remaining 20% for services.
He remarked at least 30% of this total is reflected in jobs created locally, and in the circulation (of money) that positively impacts the wider economy beyond the tourism sector.

Vsquez del Mercado reiterated the 2012 summer was good, with a tourism influx that continues to point upwards; this should be sustained and strengthened with promotional efforts that have been shown to have a positive impact.

Therefore, Vsquez added, what comes next is to continue attracting more visitors for longer holiday breaks including U.S. Labor Day, as well as the Fall breaks, which are similar to the Easter holiday period in Mexico

A Bunch of Things You May Not Know About Cap'n Greg

If you've ever picked up a copy of the Rocky Point Times and not read the clever quips by Cap'n Greg in his monthly column "Ask Cap'n Greg" as he answers questions from readers or just people on the street or in a bar with his unique style of irreverent humor, then you probably only read one copy of a Rocky Point Times, and that was to find out if you could bring Fido across the border without his papers.

In fact, most of us go to the Cap'n's column first just to start with that funny fix before we begin leafing through the more seriously informative and entertaining morsels we've come to love about Rocky Point Times. That's not to slight the Cap'n for an informative and entertaining column, for one can learn much from his witticisms about life in our little slice of paradise-especially beer drinking and taco eating etiquette; or why some Mexican pickup trucks have a five gallon jar on the roof with a hose running down into the engine area; you know, important stuff like that.

Good Samaritan Church of God is a "Picture" of Progress and Dedication

Back in January we published a blog about the abundance of helping hands from the American Community in Rocky Point featuring the selfless efforts of several residents of our community and how they helped the needy in several different charities locally. We wrote about Ron and Carol Okinga who, among other charities they help, were showing up at a small new Church every Saturday to cook a pancake breakfast for the neighborhood kids. The Church is called The Good Samaritan Church of God. You can read our blog about the church as it was then at http://www.sonoranresorts.mx/?p=3155 .

Pastors Edgar and Alma Cabrera, originally from the Douglas, Arizona area started their church only last September, and with the help of good hearted community service people like Kory Bonini who put them together with the Okingas, and the efforts of others who spread the word, other churches in Arizona and New Mexico, even as far away as Spokane, Washington began to visit just to see how they could help with Edgar and Alma's plans to build a larger church building made of block to replace the small chipboard building that existed when our last blog was written in January.

Rocky Point Feels a 5.2 Earthquake Plus Others. No Damage or Injuries Reported

Rocky Point felt an earthquake on Sunday August 19th at around 10:20 p.m. Since that time, there have been a few more as well. The first, and strongest measured 5.2 and occurred 45 miles SSW of our coastal town.

Residents of Puerto Peasco reported experiencing mild tremors and shaking as a result of the quake, but there have been no reports of injuries or structural damage. "I was watching TV and it felt like someone suddenly moved the couch" reported one resident "Lots of people did feel it though."

A Tsunami warning had been issued by the NOAA's National Weather Service for the coastal areas of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama and Mexico shortly after the earthquake was recorded, but has since been cancelled. Puerto Penasco was not at risk of tsunamis due to the shallow depth and relatively short distance across the Sea of Cortez. As of this afternoon, there were no reports from city or state officials regarding damage or injuries directly resulting from the quake.

Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers and PH Naffah to Play a Rare Acoustic Duo Concert Saturday October 13, 2012 Inside Wrecked at the Reef in Puerto Penasco

Roger Clyne and PH Naffah, founding members of The Refreshments and currently half of nationally touring Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers (RCPM) will play a rare acoustic duo concert Saturday night October 13, 2012 inside Wrecked At the Reef in Puerto Penasco, Sonora. Neither Clyne nor Naffah are strangers to Puerto Penasco, both have played 26 concerts with RCPM in their favorite seaside fishing village since 2000. They will play songs from their extensive catalog with The Refreshments, RCPM and likely a cover song or two by their favorite bands.

Both are very accomplished as an acoustic duo act. Following the breakup of the Refreshments in 1998, Clyne and Naffah played dozens of shows throughout Arizona and eventually penned the first several songs which would launch RCPM in late 1998. They've kept their aggressive duo act active throughout the last several years playing in front of intimate crowds of 100 to those in excess of 5000. In 2012, they've played several successful dates throughout the Midwest and will have completed a 5 date tour throughout California just prior to their October 13th date in Penasco.

In early 2012, the night prior to RCPM's annual January Jam at JJ's Cantina, Roger Clyne played a solo, acoustic show to a sold out audience inside Wrecked. According to those in attendance, there was no lack of energy or commitment from Clyne, known for leading RCPM through 4 hour performances during the band's annual June Circus Mexicus festival also held in Penasco.

Joining Clyne and Naffah will be Black Carl, an up and coming 5 piece band also from Tempe who is riding the wave of quick success in the Arizona music scene. Lead singer Emma Pew has drawn comparisons to Adele and Grace Potter, is backed by an accomplished band producing their "desert funk" sound. In early 2012, Paste Magazine tagged them #2 out of the top 10 Arizona bands to watch.

JJ's Cantina will present Black Carl on Friday night October 12th . They will be performing a full band set under the stars on the outdoor stage on JJ's patio. Get a sneak peak to the band many are calling Tempe's next big thing. Jason Boots will open the show. Known by many as RCPM's "mobile mariachi", he's an accomplished singer/songwriter who has opened for Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers.

Fans are encouraged to book beachfront condo reservations at www.rprmexico.com and purchase Mexican auto insurance from www.ammexinsurance.com .

More Money Earmarked for Street Paving

Puerto Penasco has been moving full steam ahead with street paving for the past couple years. It seems that the momentum will continue as the City announced the latest list of paving projects to come.

With an investment of 67 million 500 thousand pesos the City plans to pave more roads including those listed above, covering a total area of 142, 666 square meters.

The paving, water, sewer, new street lights, Malecon renovation, and many more projects are a sure sign that the City is confident in the future and willing to put the infrastructure in to prove it.

Independence Day in Mexico is September 16th

There is a common misconception in the USA and parts outside of Mexico that Independence Day is Cinco de Mayo. That is not case and, most of Mexico does not celebrate Cinco de Mayo as that day is a celebration remembering a regional battle, not a national event.

In the early hours of September 16th, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a priest in the small town of Dolores, Guanajuato, rang the church bell to gather the townspeople. He called for the people of Mexico to rise up against the Spanish Crown, thus initiating Mexico's War of Independence. The country did not achieve independence until 1821, but it is this event, known as the Grito de Dolores which is commemorated every year in town squares across Mexico.

The largest Independence Day celebration takes place in Mexico City's Zocalo, which is decorated from the beginning of September with red, white and green lights and Mexican flags. On the 15th, at 11 pm the President of the Republic goes out onto the central balcony of the National Palace (Palacio Nacional), rings the bell (the same bell Hidalgo rang in 1810, brought to Mexico City in 1886) and cries to the people gathered in the square below, who enthusiastically respond "Viva!"

At the end of the third Viva Mexico! the crowd goes wild waving flags, ringing noisemakers and spraying foam. Then fireworks light up the sky as the crowd cheers. Later the Mexican national anthem is sung.

The celebrations continue on the 16th with civic ceremonies and parades. Perhaps the most touching festivities are those in small communities in which school children of all ages participate. Rocky Point will have a parade and many festivities throughout the weekend. If you have never participated in this event, it really is worth the trip to see.

Searching for Sand Dollars? Wondering where they all went? There's a Place and a Time you can fill a Bucket with them!

If you've been frequenting Puerto Peasco for longer than a decade you probably have fond memories of the days when sand dollars were plentiful all along the beaches from Encanto to Sandy Beach.  All you really had to do was wait until the tide cycle was around five feet or less in depth and look carefully to find them partially buried in the shallow sandy bottom near the beach. They came in all sizes, too, remember? The fragile baby ones that were about the size of a quarter you had to handle so carefully or they would surely break before you could get them back to your camp site or trailer.

Remember the shrill of excitement that echoed along the beach when the kids found a perfect three incher or especially when one discovered a "giant" five incher?  And you could actually find enough to break a couple of them apart and tell children gathered around the story or read the poem of  the angels (or doves) as you removed them from the center so fragile and beautiful, so full of meaning and hope. The look of wonderment on their captivated little faces alone was worth the trip.

Sonoran Resorts Sales Group Welcomes Dolores Vargas Back to the Team!

Four and a half years ago, Dolores Vargas had to leave the Sonoran Resorts Sales Group, her condo at the Sonoran Spa and the town she loved so much in order to take on the loving task of caring for her parents who had introduced her to this beach side paradise as a little girl.

When she left for Tucson, Dolores didn't know when she would return; she just knew she would when she could.  Keeping her condominium and maintaining contact with friends, visiting when possible kept her hopes alive until her parents' health improved to a point where they are fairly independent now days and, in fact, looking forward to visiting Puerto Peasco again as they've done since the early 60's when they first introduced a young Dolores to the culture of old Mexico.

Head Out to Rocky Point! More Than a Ride

While carefully navigating over the roads from Phoenix to Puerto Peasco, it is common to come across sleek white vans - often with a travel trailer in tow - brandishing an invitation to all to "Head Out to Rocky Point." Pinning down a time to sit and chat with Head Out owners Janelle (formally Mitschele) and her husband Mike Jarvinen proved to be a bit more complicated as they are, as you may have guessed, on the road quite a bit. On a rare Friday when both of them were in town together and had a "day-off" between runs, I had a chance to meet up with them in their comfortable studio condo in the Old Port.

Janelle and Mike enthusiastically emphasized their service is "not just a ride," as they take pride in promoting Rocky Point in general and over their 7 years of operation have had people place their trust in them to transport family members (from 5 to 95) back and forth across the border.
Would you pay $25 for this Harley? (Beautiful young lady not included!)

It's a 2006 "Street Bob" Dyna with a load of extras, one owner, with only 8,200 miles on it. "Whoa!" you say. "What's the catch here?" you ask. The catch is there's going to be 499 other people who want the bike also, and they are willing to put up their $25 for a chance to get this bike because there are only 499 other people who are going to have a chance at this beautiful Harley.

If you played the lottery at the same odds that exist for this bike, a lottery ticket would cost around a hundred grand!  The chance to own a Harley in pristine condition for $25 may never cross your path again!

If any of the above got your attention, then please read on for the rest of the story-and it only gets better!

Besides getting a chance to win this bike, and a chance to win a series of prizes in weekly drawings every Saturday up to the October 6th drawing for the Harley, your $25 is going to help two worthy causes here in Rocky Point.  One of those is the current owner of the Harley, a veteran who has given this bike TLC since he bought it brand new in 2006 and who now must sell it. Enter the Rocky Point Business Expo Organizing Committee who saw an opportunity to raise some badly needed funds for the Rocky Point Tourism and Visitor Assistance Office here. The office, headed by Rosie Glover since its inception,  has been a blessing to hundreds of visitors in need of a variety of assistance in numerous urgent situations.  You should just read some of the letters of sincere gratitude that have been written about this very effective office.

So, the committee set up a raffle scenario for the bike that gives tremendous odds at a more than fair price to win this Harley in perfect original owner condition.  Here's the kicker: in order to offer the raffle tickets for only $25 Dollars and cut the sales off at just 500, the committee must sell all 500 tickets before the drawing date of October 6th.

Guacamole - Real Authentic Mexican "guac"

Real Guacamole is simple. Very simple. And, in my opinion, much better than the recipes that call for mayonnaise, sour cream, cream cheese, or other non-traditional ingredients. After last month's complicated recipe, I thought that you might appreciate an easy one. Here it is:

5 Large Hass avocadoes (black in color, slightly soft to the press)
2 Large limes, juice of
1 Medium white onion (diced)
3/4 Cup loosely packed cilantro (chopped finely)
1 Large tomato (Diced-make sure it isn't overly ripe)
Salt
Finely chopped fresh jalapeno (optional)

Directions:

1. Slice avocados in half. Discard the seed. Scoop out of shell with a spoon. Place in bowl.

2. Add juice of one fresh lime immediately to prevent browning. Use a fork and mash to desired consistency.

3. Add chopped onions, tomato, and cilantro. Stir gently to mix ingredients.

4. Add juice of second lime and then salt to taste. Stir just slightly, until incorporated.

5. Add jalapeo to taste.

6. Serve with your favorite tortilla chips for a dip, or use with your favorite Mexican dish.

* A side note: this is to make a chunky, yet creamy guacamole. Some people prefer to use a food processor with all the ingredients to make for a VERY creamy dip.
14 Facts You may not Know about the Octopus

If you've ever explored the tide pools anywhere along the beaches of Puerto Peasco on the Sea of Cortez, you've surely watched and/or played with an octopus or two.  You may not know that those small ones you've seen, possibly living in a small clam or scallop  shell, were not babies but full grown adults of one of the 300 species of octopuses that come in a multitude of sizes.  Here are a few more facts you may not know about this strong, sensitive and very intelligent cephalopod:
  1. The octopus has been traced back 30 million years to when its ancestors swam the Antarctica.
  2. Octopuses are cephalopods, a class of mollusk that also includes squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus.
  3. Big Family Tree: There are approximately 300 species of octopi ranging in size from just a few centimeters in length up to 15-17 feet.
  4. Plural of Octopus: There seems to be two distinct schools of thought on what is acceptable usage for the plural of octopus.  One group uses "octopuses" as the familiar plural and "octopods" as the more formal or scientific form. This group frowns upon the other plural form, "octopi" as not acceptable. The other school accepts all three plural forms, with "octopi" used as the collective term such as when referring to the entire species. For this article, we shall use the collective plural term "Octopi".
  5. Arms not Tentacles: Octopi do not have tentacles. Those eight protrusions are fully multifunctional arms that are connected in the middle of the octopuses, mantle.
