Fireproofing Roanoke
Roanoke Fire-EMS is teaching citizens how to prevent, prepare for, and respond to fires
What's the best way to protect your family from fire? Be ahead of the game, of course. Your best defense is a good offense. Roanoke Fire-EMS believes education is the key to that strategy. That's why the department is working with public schools, churches and other community groups to teach citizens about fire safety -- to be aware of situations that can cause fires, learn how to prevent fires, and be ready to respond should a fire occur. Tree stewards help care for city's urban forest
Early 20th century poet Joyce Kilmer wrote that "only God can make a tree." But only people can take care of them. For the past several years, the city's Parks and Recreation Department has been training volunteer tree stewards to help plant, catalog, monitor, and prune the thousands of trees that grow in Roanoke's parks and along its streets. The next Roanoke Tree Stewards training class will get underway in January 2012. Check out the details here. |
