Aloha ,

The beginning of the Fall season was exciting with the final City Council hearing and approval of the Laie Hotel Special Management Area (SMA) permit. As we head into the holidays, we have a few updates to share with you.

First, the deadline to submit comments on the Oahu General Plan has been extended -- comments will be accepted through Wednesday, November 30th.

The City & County of Honolulu's Department of Planning & Permitting (DPP) is accepting public input as part of its project to update the plan. The plan helps guide long-range planning and growth for Oahu.

According to DPP, the update "will look at the critical issues of growth, development, and quality of life that island residents are most concerned about, including regional population, economic health, affordable housing, and sustainability."

In scientific surveys conducted in 2009 and 2010, Ko'olau Loa residents indicated they are very concerned about affordable housing, economic health and jobs. Commenting on the General Plan, even if your input is brief, is a great way to ensure that City decision makers know what's most important to you. Your opinion matters and will help shape public policy for our island and region.

Residents are encouraged to provide input and comments will be accepted through Wednesday, November 30th; they can be submitted by e-mailing them to: [email protected]. To view the current plan, update materials, and comment info, please go to DPP's General Plan webpage at:

Remember, your opinion matters and every voice counts!

Grand Opening of the renovated PCC Gateway Restaurant -- another local dining venue for residents

Last week the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) opened the doors to its renovated and re-envisioned Gateway restaurant. Redesigned to evoke the feel of a Samoan fale with wooden pillars and angular sweeping roof, the restaurant is adorned with shell torches providing ambient lighting and features one of the world's largest murals -- extending nearly 8,000 square feet and taking guests on a visual journey through the many cultures of Polynesia.

To celebrate the opening, kama'aina are invited to be among the first to experience the new Gateway. Through the end of the year local residents may take advantage of a special rate to enjoy the Gateway's Island Feast buffet and seating at the critically acclaimed evening show, "Ha: Breath of Life". For more information, please call the PCC at 293-3333 or go to www.polynesia.com.

Laie Hotel Update

Since the Laie Hotel Special Management Area (SMA) permit was approved by the City Council we've been working on a number of items related to the hotel redevelopment. A few of these include:

- Working to meet the various conditions placed on the SMA approval, including the watershed study and drainage master plan. The study and master plan must both be submitted to the City's Department of Planning & Permitting prior to the issuance of vertical construction building permits for the hotel.

- Relocating the Chevron gas station and McDonald's restaurant, both current tenants on the hotel site. Now that the SMA approval has been granted, relocation plans are being developed and reviewed.

- Working to secure a developer for the project. At this point, we are in discussions with internal developers who are evaluating the parameters of the redevelopment project.

We'll keep you updated and appreciate your continuing involvement.
