Aloha ,

We're moving forward and good things are happening in our community! First, the Zoning Committee of the City Council has announced a public hearing to receive input on a permit application for the new Laie hotel. Your attendance in support is critical. The meeting is set for Wednesday, June 1st, 6 p.m., at the Kahuku High School cafeteria. For more info, see the full story below.

Second, we just posted a new video about this past weekend's Native Forest Restoration Service Project, co-sponsored by Envision Laie, Hawaii Reserves, Inc., and others. The short clip discusses the environmental and cultural significance of the project and allows viewers to see the challenging trek up the Ko'olau mountains and the successful planting of Hawaiian koa and sandalwood trees. To view it, go to www.envisionlaie.com.

Third, we are happy to announce that a new project updates feature has been added to the Envision Laie Information Center. Info and renderings on various projects and plans, including the hotel, drainage, and new amenities at BYU-Hawaii and the Polynesian Cultural Center are featured. The information center is located in the Laie Shopping Center and tours can be arranged by calling 293-6461.

Finally, a reminder that the voting period for the neighborhood board election ends this Friday, May 20th. The Laie Community Association conducted a survey to understand where each candidate stands on key community issues -- see the story below for more info.

We appreciate your input and support as we continue to move forward as a community.

Mahalo,

Public Hearing for Laie Hotel Set

Zoning Committee hearing on Wednesday, June 1st, 6 p.m. at Kahuku High School cafeteria

150 construction jobs...125 new jobs for residents, and students in BYU-Hawaii's hospitality program...a hotel nearby for those visiting the Polynesian Cultural Center and local families...a venue for wedding receptions, family reunions and other gatherings...

Are you in favor? If so, your support is needed.

The Zoning Committee of the City Council will be in our community to hear resident input regarding the hotel on Wednesday, June 1st, 6 p.m., at the Kahuku High School cafeteria. Opposing voices -- some from outside our community -- have been working hard to prevent our opportunities for needed growth and jobs, and will be at the hearing to voice their opinions. If you are in favor of growth that will benefit our community and institutions, it's vital that you attend.

Although the site is already zoned for hotel and business use, a Special Management Area permit is needed due to the site's proximity to the shoreline. If the SMA permit is granted by the City Council, building permits for the hotel may be obtained, with groundbreaking anticipated at the end of this year. The goal is to have the hotel open for the PCC's 50th Anniversary in 2013!

Voting Reminder - Neighborhood Board Election

Every Vote Counts -- voting period ends this Friday, May 20th

As previously announced, voting for our Ko'olauloa Neighborhood Board election ends this Friday, May 20th. There are five subdistricts in our area and a number of candidates are running for office.

The Laie Community Association conducted a survey to understand where each candidate stands on key community issues. The survey and candidate responses can be viewed in the More Information section of our homepage at www.envisionlaie.com.

The City mailed residents their voting passcodes and instructions earlier this month, and all voting is done by internet or telephone. Voting takes just a few minutes and is easy to do. Questions? Call the Neighborhood Board Commission Office at 768-3717.

Happy voting!
