Aloha ,

The city's planning department has scheduled its last meeting in our community on the Ko'olau Loa Sustainable Communities Plan draft for Tuesday, December 7th.  This is our time to tell decision makers what we value most and what we'd like to see in our region in the next 25 years . . . so save the date to attend this important meeting.

Speaking of values, we've just released a new Values video that features various residents talking about what they cherish about our home and what they hope the future holds for coming generations.  Read more about the video and how to view it below.

The last community meeting on the Ko'olau Loa Sustainable Communities Plan (KSCP) is set for Tuesday, December 7th at 6:30 p.m. in the Kahuku High School cafeteria.

Residents will have an opportunity to voice their opinions about the city's plan that will guide land use in our communities for the next 25 years.
If you want to see affordable housing and more jobs in our community, it's critical that you attend to show your support.  Opposing voices that don't want any growth for our community -- some from outside our area -- have been working hard to prevent our opportunities for affordable housing and jobs, and will undoubtedly be at the meeting to voice their opinions.

So save the date and plan to join us.

Values
video released

The text of the KSCP describes "the vision" for Ko'olau Loa: "The community envisions a safe and healthy environment based on strong family values, where residents have access to quality jobs, affordable housing and ample recreational opportunities within the region."

This video, shot during Lā'ie Days in July 2010, features residents talking about the values of Lā'ie and Ko'olau Loa. What residents value most is the feeling of belonging and safety that comes from living with friendly, loving people that care and look out for one another.  It's about 'ohana and the aloha spirit. It's about family and faith.  These are the values that are most cherished by the people of Lā'ie and Ko'olau Loa but they're jeopardized by the challenges facing the community.  In fact, 72 percent of residents surveyed by Envision Lā'ie "see their quality of life decreasing for future generations."

The growth of BYU-Hawaii, housing in Malaekahana and other changes to the KSCP offer hope that these values can be preserved so families can continue to enjoy living in the country.
