Summer Arrives!

Dear KEF Family and Friends,

As schools begin to let out in the US and the first heat waves of summer roll in, Kenyan students remain busy with their second term.  In Kenya, schooling is year round, with three one-month breaks in April, August, and December.  Form Four, or twelfth grade, students anticipate their upcoming KCSE's (Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education examinations), taken in November.  In Kenya, KCSE scores single-handedly determine student eligibility for university or technical college.  The months between now and then represent a key study window for this year's graduating class.

We are pleased this month to showcase our most recent student workshops in Nakuru and then the Coastal region of Kenya.  Like Nairobi, the Nakuru and Coast workshops went off with great success!

We also have some updates from our New York office.  Executive Director Brad Broder will be traveling to Kenya for five weeks this summer to attend the Kisumu and Isiolo workshops as well as work with photographer and videographer Paul Horton to document KEF students in their schools and homes.  Together, Brad and Paul will visit several KEF partner schools to gather footage for our new website, to be unveiled later in the summer, as well as for brochures and other promotional material.

Finally, Development Manager Rachel Silver will be leaving the KEF to pursue a PhD.  We have included a note from her below.

With care and our warmest summer greetings,

The KEF Team

Development Manager Rachel Silver to Pursue PhD

Rachel 2

This month is my last at the KEF as I prepare to begin a PhD program in Educational Policy Studies at the University of Madison-Wisconsin.  I will focus in Comparative and International Education, conducting research on the impacts of UN educational policy on refugee women in East Africa.

I have loved being part of the KEF family during this period of remarkable growth and feel inspired by the dedication and commitment of KEF students, staff, and donors.  It has been a real pleasure getting to know so many of you, and I look forward to remaining part of this wonderful organization for years to come.
