Conference Update:  September 8, 2010         Weeks until SE2: 2
Breakouts highlight successful partnerships

1:30-2:45pm:  Solar for Humanity: Renewable Energy & Energy Efficient building in affordable housing

The Midwest Renewable Energy Association has teamed up with We Energies and Habitat for Humanity on the one-of-a-kind Solar for Humanity program. The goals of the partnership are training, education and bringing solar to low-income areas. Learn how Habitat for Humanity designs and builds "solar-ready" homes, how MREA trains the future solar workforce on actual homes, and how home owners are able to have a low, stable energy bill. The presentation will describe the partnership and how it prepares solar installers with real-world experience while educating consumers.

3:15-4:30pm: Greenways and sustainable corridors: a plan for the upper Milwaukee River renaissance

A diverse team is working with the Milwaukee River Work Group to create a vision of a recreation and restoration corridor for a stretch of the Milwaukee River. The challenge is to create a compelling plan that prioritizes ecological integrity in an area that has known contamination, is a well-used recreational corridor, and is highly impacted by location in the heart of the city.  The presentation will describe the process and product of the effort including the creation of a unique river conservancy agent, a self-funded structure, and an ecologically-based decision making structure to protect and enhance this unique greenway.

During the afternoon breakout sessions, you'll have a chance to get a great look at the design elements, approach to construction, funding and partnerships that make these projects exceptional.  AND, these sessions qualify for continuing education for GBCI and AIA.

SE2 Award Winners to be announced at conference

Who will be the winners in 2010?

The SE2 Award program recognizes leadership in energy efficient and sustainable design, construction and operation of Wisconsin commercial and other non-residential buildings and related systems. The goal of the program is to encourage greater collaboration among owners, designers, builders and operators by highlighting the value of projects that enhance the built environment.

Each year, our applicants are judged by an out-of-state team of experts, and the winners are announced in a ceremony at our SE2 Conference.  There are 3 levels of Awards:  Focus on Energy Award of Excellence, Award of Merit, Special Citation.

Local Food Spotlight

In an effort to make our event more sustainable, WGBA has committed to sourcing all ingredients for the meals, snacks, and the kick off event from local producers. We aim to support the local economy and Wisconsin farmers.  Each week, we'll feature an item from our menu, along with information on the source.

Providing Pulled Chicken BBQ Sandwich for Conference

All of the animals at Dominion Valley Farm are raised strictly on pasture, where they eat what they love - grass clover, other rich greens and bugs.   None of the chickens, pigs, cattle, ducks or turkeys receive growth hormones or antibiotics, but they do get natural sunlight and clean bedding every day. Owners Brandon and Tammera purchased the land in Allenton, WI in 1997 and together with their four sons are growing their farm - this year planning to increase their number of chickens and turkeys.
