If you have your LEED AP and have not opted in to maintain your credential, you should consider your options.
Since 2000 over 100,000 individuals have become a LEED Accredited Professional and must decide, before the fall of 2011, whether to opt into the LEED Specialty Program. Enrollment windows have been distributed to every current LEED AP during the fall of 2009 in alphabetical order by surname. LEED APs without specialty can view their enrollment window through My
Credentials at www.gbci.org. The last enrollment windows close October
27, 2011.
Those choosing to opt into the Credentialing Maintenance Program (CMP) will be required to accrue (30) continuing education units within two years of their "opt in date" to maintain their LEED AP status.
This two year period is called the CMP reporting period or, simply, reporting period. Those who choose not to opt in will become inactive LEED APs.
The Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) is designed to expand the knowledge and experience base of LEED Professionals. The program is also designed to facilitate a LEED Professional's continuing professional development. As with any credential, it is advantageous to maintain current status through the appropriate continuing education. Advances in sustainable buildings, and their associated mechanical systems, are occurring at such a rapid pace that continuing education is a must. Additionally, ongoing revisions to the current LEED rating systems will require educational refreshers to those who studied previous LEED versions.
Finally, companies may gain a competitive edge by employing a team of LEED APs with specialty.
