3 Key Nutrition & Labeling Trends for Food Marketers

Recently I was food shopping with my kids when my 8 year old son Sam said, "Mom, I think we should buy this cereal - it has lots of fiber and it doesn't have too much fat or salt." 
 
Whoa...what was that?  Sam  was coaching ME on what products to purchase?  Now, I would never hold up my kids as great examples of how to eat well.  After all, we certainly serve our fair share of chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, and hot dogs at our dinner table.  But I will say this: my kids are much more aware of the nutritional value of the foods they eat than I ever was at their age -- or for years afterwards.

Millennial ShopperNPD Report Says Frozen Food Fits Millennials
 
NPD says its latest research suggests Millennials (twenty somethings) are more likely to say their food choices at main meals are motivated by cravings, cost control, and minimal preparation time
 
They are much more likely than consumers in other age groups to use frozen entrees or other food items that are portable and do not require preparation.

Gloucester Times Reports on Whole Foods Decision to Phase Out Over-Fished SeafoodGloucester Fisherman Statue 
Whole Foods recent announcement that it will phase out species suffering from overfishing by Earth Day 2013 was not well received in Gloucester and other New England fishing ports.   Since this will likely affect species like cod and haddock, it could have a significant negative impact on the New England fishing industry.
