 Mike's PictureA Big Fish Story
Sometimes I am amazed how God speaks to me. I picked up my Bible yesterday and asked God where He wanted me to go today. I kept hearing Jonah in my mind. Now I don't camp out much in the Old Testament; I would much rather study the Gospels and their message of Grace, but for some reason Jonah was the book of the day. To save you some time it is between Obadiah and Micah (It took me a while).

Now we all know the story of Jonah being swallowed by the great fish because he would not go to Nineveh; Jonah was basically running from God. That sounds familiar to me. How many of us do this on a daily basis? The amazing fact for me in this story is while Jonah is in the fish's stomach, he spends most of his time in prayer. You know what happens in the stomach of an animal or fish. You are slowly being digested, and he is praying! I personally would have been freaking out.

As I read Jonah's prayer to God while he is dying in chapter two a verse hit me like a ton of bricks. The passage reads, "Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs". As I type on my $1,500.00 laptop and sit in my comfortable apartment drinking coffee this morning I wonder how much grace I have forfeited because I am always trying to control my life and make everyone around me feel safe and comfortable.

You see the problem with Jonah was that he chose to dismiss the purpose God had for him. What idols are keeping you from following God into the unknown?

Messages of Music

Phil & Christy
Most people who know me know how much I love music.  It doesn't usually matter what kind, as long as it has a catchy sound.  I especially appreciate songs that struggle with the things of life and reality; songs that ask questions about God, life, relationships, etc.   I got to take my two oldest children to their very first rock concert the other night.  A couple of Christian bands were in town and both my son and my daughter (including myself) really enjoy listening to these two bands.  As many concerts as I've been to, I always seem to forget the level of energy and excitement that is generated from the fans.  Being a Christian concert, the bands were pretty forthright in directing the excitement to the appropriate recipient-God Himself.

As I watched my kids pump their fists in the air as Scripture was read; as I watched them clap, dance, and jump to music that sung about the consistent presence of God even during dark times in our lives, I got excited to see their child-like faith.  I'm trying to teach my kids not only to have an appreciation of all the different kinds of music, but also to listen to the lyrics, because content is important.  Thinking about the war we as believers are constantly fighting, I don't always remember God's presence or His faithfulness.  I want immediate relief instead of trusting the process of God's timing to heal me and strengthen me in various areas of my life.  I also realized I don't have the exuberance about God I once had.  Sure, I experience that in spurts, maybe when I'm on a spiritual high.  But James was pretty explicit that we should "consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance."  I don't want to face trials, but I know they are necessary for my own growth and they are inevitable from an enemy who will stop at nothing to destroy me.

So, back to the concert.  I was reminded as I watched my kids enjoy the music, that I should have some level of excitement that I get to serve a God of redemption who will stop at nothing to see me changed in every aspect of my life.  This is a constant, ever-present reality, not a one-time event.  I guess I need to listen more closely to the music God is playing in my life.  Sometimes, He wants me to jump around and scream at the top of my lungs while other times He wants me to settle down and be still.  Regardless of what He is asking, the important thing is that I'm listening to His music and doing what He instructs.

Calling Retreat
Strong Rock Camp, Cleveland, GA
Our ministry is built around the verse Ephesians 1:18. In this verse Paul writes, "I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you." Nothing is as important as living within God's will for your life. Every man has a purpose; a calling on his life. As Paul expresses our importance and place in the kingdom later in Chapter 2 of Ephesians he emphasizes our calling again, "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

As men if we don't step into our calling/our purpose/our mission that piece simply won't get done. Our role is our role; it is unique to us! I invite you to step into your calling with us. We are excited to announce that Gary Barkalow will be leading 'The Calling" weekend adventure. Please check out Gary's new ministry www.thenobleheart.com. Many of you who have attended "Wild at Heart" boot camp know Gary and his message of living a life of purpose. Come explore deeper what God has in store for your life.
