Prayer Together Alone
At Shir Hamakom, at our music worship, we encourage that unique Jewish practice of praying together alone.
Many of our prayers can easily be recited alone, privately and at home, but we choose instead to join together in a minyan (quorum of 10) to join our voices and spirit in prayer. Once together, supported by community, we give ourselves space and permission to pray alone and find personal moments of spirituality and connection.
There is no time that this is more important and relevant than at the High Holy Days. Our moments of group prayer are punctuated with personal invitations to reflect and discover our own breath and song alone.
The rhythm and flow of the keva (structure) of the service provides a backdrop for each of us to find our unique connection and kavanah (feeling) with the words offered to us through song and text.
I've had the pleasure of rehearsing with our "bimah team" of musicians for the High Holy Days music worship. Over and over I have been drawn in and struck by not only the talent of these musicians, but the kavanah, humility and intention of our presentation of prayer. In both group worship and as a backdrop for personal reflection, we have created something highly spiritual in our synergy that I am anxious to share with you.
In practice of this timeless and unique Jewish tradition, I hope that you will come to our High Holy Days music worship prepared to pray together alone.

About our High Holy Day music worship. I have carefully selected a "bimah team", worship leaders who will encourage participation, surround our space with beautiful music from the heart, and are wholly capable of embracing our vision of blending the traditional with the dynamic and fresh.
The High Holy Days music worship at Shir Hamakom will extend the culture and music of our community into a new place of prayer, full of new insight, traditional chanting, familiar music and the opportunity to slow down and reflect.
Our theme for these Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe) will be "Lev Tahor", a "pure heart". Our journey together will invite quiet moments of reflection as well as the full spirit of community, I personally invite you to join us into a music worship experience that I guarantee, will be a Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur that speaks to you in a new and memorable way, and leaves you filled with spirit and song, rejuvenated for the coming new year.
