Chevre (friends),

Shavuah Tov, my best wishes for a great week ahead. It is Sunday, and the cycle begins again.  You know the drill.  May this week be filled with growth, success and many everyday moments made holy by your conscious intention.

At our music worship on Friday, guest EJ Cohen from London added her voice and spirit with our soloist, Shelly Aronson (pictured above), to create a memorable worship experience.  As you may know, EJ was a co-writer with me on our opening "Hinei" prayer, and both of us enjoyed a sense of pride hearing the Shir Hamakom community fill the room with song.

EJ also taught us some lessons about sign language, as well as some of the history and evolution of Jewish signs in the Deaf community.  It was powerful to see our entire kehilah (worship group) singing the Shema with our voices and with our hands, adding the visual dimension to the melody of these holy words.

I've mentioned before how unique it was to be a part of the "Boomer Shabbat" last month in Falmouth, MA with my friends Rabbi Elias Lieberman, Dr. Wendy Nelson and Pamela Rothstein.  In a gender reversal from the norm, I was asked to light the Shabbat candles (most likely because of the close proximity between my keyboard and the candles, and not any special skills that I possess to ignite).  It was a powerful moment for me to light these lights (I'd never been asked before), and then to breathe in a moment of silence, which was broken with the words from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's "Our House".  "I'll light the fire, you place the flowers..."

It has become our Shir Hamakom tradition to include a relevant secular song in our prayer, and, with gratitude, we borrowed this idea from the Falmouth Jewish Congregation.

Graham Nash wrote this song for his partner, Joni Mitchell, in the late '60's.  It was released on CSN&Y's album "Deja Vu" in 1970.  The lyrics are printed in the lower right column of this email.  Here is an "unplugged" version of CSN playing Our House.

Our next music worship in September will be for the High Holy Days, and we will resume our monthly Shabbat music worship on October 15th.  As I've mentioned, our seating is extremely limited for our High Holy Days worship in Glastonbury, please take a moment to register for seating, we expect a full sanctuary for this memorable music worship, and we will not be able to accommodate walk-in worshipers because of space limitations.  Information and registration.
Shalom,

Arnie Davidson

High Holy Days - Shir HamakomHigh Holy Days - 5771

Twenty-five Days Until High Holy Days 5771.

Rosh Hashanah is early in September on 9/9/10.
Often we get lost in the warmth and relaxation of summer, postponing our "return" to the reality of the High Holy Days until September.  Last year, we had that luxury when Rosh Hashanah fell on September 20th.  This year, Rosh Hashanah is just a few days past Labor Day.  The time to plan is now.

Join us at our first High Holy Day music worship service this year at a location in central Glastonbury. (Click for details.)

About our High Holy Day music worship.  I have carefully selected a "bimah team", worship leaders who will encourage participation, surround our space with beautiful music from the heart, and are wholly capable of embracing our vision of blending the traditional with the dynamic and fresh.

The High Holy Days music worship at Shir Hamakom will extend the culture and music of our community into a new place of prayer, full of new insight, traditional chanting, familiar music and the opportunity to slow down and reflect.

Our theme for these Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe) will be "Lev Tahor", a "pure heart".  Our journey together will invite quiet moments of reflection as well as the full spirit of community, I personally invite you to join us into a music worship experience that I guarantee, will be a Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur that speaks to you in a new and memorable way, and leaves you filled with spirit and song, rejuvenated for the coming new year.

For this, our first Shir Hamakom High Holy Days music worship, space will be limited and we are not able to accommodate walk-in worshipers.  It is important that you contact us soon to ensure your seat.  I look forward to seeing and welcoming you there.

I'll light the fire, you place the flowers in the vase that you bought today.
Staring at the fire for hours and hours while I listen to you
Play your love songs all night long for me, only for me.

Come to me now and rest your head for just five minutes, everything is good.
Such a cozy room, the windows are illuminated by the
evening sunshine through them, fiery gems for you, only for you.

Our house is a very, very very fine house with two cats in the yard, life used to be so hard,
Now everything is easy cause of you and our la, la, la:
