A Newsletter from Baby's Space                                  Volume 2, Issue 3 - March, 2011

Baby's Space is a holistic, research-based approach to infant through 3rd grade education, adolescent mental health services and parent support for children and families residing in poverty and violence.

Dear Friends:

Mark your calendar for Friday, April 29th! Join us from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. for a cocktail party benefiting Baby's Space at the legendary Fine Line Music Café in downtown Minneapolis. Our annual benefit supports scholarships for children enrolled in the Minneapolis Baby's Space childcare facility and Tatanka Academy. This year we're adding convenient online registrations and payment. Watch your in-box in early March for our first-ever electronic invitation. And for those of you who wish to pay via check, we'll be mailing invitations the week of April 1st.

This summer we'll offer Tatanka Academy Summer Camp. Our five-week camp allows our current students to continue their academic, social and emotional progress. Mornings will be spent with Tatanka teachers strengthening core reading, writing and math skills. Afternoons will feature programming to connect the children to nature, which is part of traditional Native American values. The programming includes helping in Como and Little Earth neighborhood gardens. On Fridays, our students will be treated to educational (and fun!) field trips to the Arboretum, Como Zoo and local lakes and farms. We're accepting enrollments from students outside of Tatanka, too. Contact Margie Nelson if you're interested at margie@babyspace.org

Best Regards,

Replication Update: Planning Meeting at White Earth
WhiteEarthMtg
Planning meeting to bring the Baby's Space model to the White Earth Indian Reservation

We're pleased to have the White Earth Indian reservation in northern Minnesota as a Baby's Space partner. The White Earth Indian reservation will implement our full-day, full-year model into three existing Head Start-program classrooms for 4-year olds. Baby's Space will also provide staff training, classroom improvements and curriculum development.

A recent meeting between Baby's Space and White Earth leaders was spent planning how to incorporate our unique classroom environments into their new space.

Our thanks to Mary Tenorio-Farley, Julie Molaceh, Rhonda Hanson, Lynette Londo, and Carolyn Williams for their active and enthusiastic participation in our planning meeting.
