MINDING THE GAP

Dear Friends:

Education is receiving a lot of attention these days. President Obama devoted a lengthy part of the State of the Union address to education. Here in Minnesota, a visit by Education Secretary Arne Duncan made headlines when Duncan stated Minnesota has the worst achievement gap between whites and minorities.

Lots of attention and many headlines. But where are the solutions?

A long-standing practice at Baby's Space is a holistic approach - and solution - to the disparities in infant mortality, academic achievement gaps, mental illness and poor high school graduation rates.

While most programs and accompanying money are treating the symptoms of these problems, our holistic approach keeps problems from emerging. How do we do it? Baby's Space serves a neighborhood's most vulnerable children with high-quality childcare, kindergarten through grade-three public education, parenting support and mental health services. How do we measure it? Last year, all of our preschool students met or exceeded the criteria of the Minneapolis Public Schools kindergarten readiness assessment.

The word is out! Our success at Baby's Space is attracting attention as we expand to new neighborhoods. You can view firsthand how we approach our programs -  and join our team in offering effective solutions to close the gap.

Best Regards,

Terrie Rose

The 12th annual celebration features food, live music and a presentation about how Baby's Space is making a difference in the lives of vulnerable children.

Invitations will be mailed in March.

At our 2010 event, more than $75,000 was raised for transition scholarships, which allows children enrolled at Baby's Space to remain in the program if they aren't able to make a payment.  Last year 31% of our families received scholarships.

Baby's Space Partners with Catholic Charities

Baby's Space is proud to announce a partnership with Northside Child Development Center (NCDC) in Minneapolis.

NCDC is adopting the Baby's Space model to bring training, reflective consultation and customized learning sessions to the directors and lead staff. The partnership, which began in January, 2011, will also include enhancing the toddler environment. NCDC is familiar with the successes of the Baby's Space model, as it has integrated the research-based Baby's Space concepts of attachment, noticing and wondering with infants, and reflective supervision for several years.

Northside is a program of Catholic Charities and serves children ages six weeks to 15 years. The center provides early education, preschool, school readiness and school reinforcement experiences, all of which combat the developmentally detrimental effects of poverty.
