Dear Friends:

Happy holidays! As you celebrate the season, let me share some of our joys:

- In November, 47 donors contributed nearly $15,000 to Baby's Space during the "Give to the Max Day" fundraising drive! That's up from 15 donors in 2009.

- An anonymous and greatly generous friend of Baby's Space has given us a donation to purchase computers for Tatanka Academy.

- Breck School families are matched with Baby's Space and Tatanka Academy families to fill holiday wish lists. Thanks to the generosity of these

HEROES: THANKS, RYAN!

One of the most exciting initiatives at Baby's Space is our replication effort to bring our research- and child-first based model to other centers. The replication effort requires significant legal work. There are contracts outlining the relationship between Baby's Space and partnering centers and Ryan Miest, a partner with Robins, Kaplan & Ciresi law firm in Minneapolis has donated significant pro bono hours to this effort.

Ryan M
Ryan Miest provides Baby's Space with invaluable legal expertise

Ryan was introduced to Baby's Space by Social Venture Partners Minnesota. His work with Terrie and Margie Nelson, director of replication, includes defining the structure of the replication program, developing the partnership contracts for new centers and providing legal counsel on organizational and non-profit law matters and protection of intellectual property.

"Ryan has provided Baby's Space with invaluable legal counsel," said Margie Nelson. "His advice and insight are an important part of our replication program and integral to each new and developing partnership."

Ryan notes that his work with Baby's Space is more than just a donation of time. "Often societal and other factors conspire to limit the opportunities and positive outcomes available to under-privileged children," Miest said. "I believe that no one is more deserving of our attention, time and energy than children. My work with Baby's Space is energizing because it's a research-based, scalable way of making a substantial and life-changing difference in the lives of children."

Ryan has practiced law for more than 10 years. He lives in southeast Minneapolis with his wife Miranda, their two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Julien and two cats. Recently Ryan joined the Baby's Space board of directors, where he selflessly provides additional talents (and time). Thank you Ryan and Robins, Kaplan & Ciresi for more than 130 hours of valuable time pro bono and for being a hero to Baby's Space!

TATANKA UPDATE
Computers Expand Curriculum

Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, Tatanka Academy will purchase four Dell computers for each classroom. The computers will be used to expand our curriculum to include keyboard instruction and access online educational software. The computers will be purchased through Computers for Schools, a non-profit program that refurbishes gently-used computers for school use. Purchasing from Computers for School enables Baby's Space to multiply our gift by purchasing four refurbished corporate cast-offs for the retail price of a new computer. Look for pictures and curriculum updates in our January newsletter!

Here's a recent blog question and Terrie's solution-focused response.

Question: My 18-month- old has started screaming when he doesn't get what he wants and will not be distracted from his goal. The screaming is disturbing but I don't want to encourage it by giving in. What should I do?

Terrie's Answer: A screaming toddler can make life difficult, particularly when you're exhausted or taking your son out in public (or both). The good news is that this stage usually only lasts for a few weeks, which may still feel unbearable. With your consistent responses, both of you will survive this disruption.

Baby
Terrie's Blog provides solution-focused answers to common questions.

A toddler deploys whatever method will work fastest to get what he wants. When he has only a few words, a limited ability to wait, and overwhelming feelings; screaming can be an effective go-to strategy if you reinforce it. As you've pointed out, giving him the cookie or putting in the video he demands ends the screaming in the short-term but only reinforces it in the long-term. Here are a few considerations:

When your son is screaming for something that you want to give him, clear explanations with gestures can be helpful. For example, with your hands cupped over your ears while shaking your head say, "Too loud." If he continues, just continue your physical prompt until he quiets. Then tell him the word you want him to use in place of screaming (like "sippy cup"). Note: He doesn't have to repeat the word - you're simply reinforcing that a nice, quiet word matches what he wants.

When he screams for something you don't want to give him or when he's resisting an action, think "red cup-blue cup." Present alternatives of something he can have or do. If he's screaming about leaving a store when there is no choice about leaving, give him controlled choices "Walk or carry?" "Shoes or coat first?" If he can't make the decision, you make it: "Okay, mommy help shoes first."

The hardest situations are those in public places. While it truly is best to limit these challenging situations for toddlers as much as you can, sometimes these circumstances are unavoidable. (I still remember my daughter having a tantrum in the middle of Target. I kept repeating semi-calmly, "I know you are mad.") My mantra was less directed at my daughter than at the adults around us who probably wondered if I'd noticed that my toddler was on the floor screaming. It may be helpful to rehearse your own script for these times when you want to reassure others (and yourself) during these meltdowns that your child is safe and understood. This, too, shall pass.
