Serving Teenage Parents
Dear Friends:
It's the month we all pause to give thanks. Here are a few things I'm thankful for.
Thoughtfulness. Thanks to the anonymous donor of a white crib. The recipient is a teen mom who's in school and working. When she received the crib, she broke into tears and said, "I know this is shabby chic and those marks are suppose to be there!"
New Partners. I'm grateful for the new partner in our replication efforts, Brooklyn Center School District (BCSD), who we'll partner with for a new Teen Parent and Childcare Center. BCSD is the recipient of a Hennepin County grant, part of a $17 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to expand its research-based pregnancy prevention program. Together we'll make a strong team.
Friends. I'm thankful for the hundreds of supporters who have supported Baby's Space and our philosophy of providing education and care for vulnerable children (and their parents) from a baby's point of view.
Give to the Max Day is Wednesday, November 17. Consider a gift to Baby's Space and your contribution will be doubled. Read the information to the right about how to donate.
Best regards,
Terrie Rose

HEROES:
Hero Provides Support to Tatanka Teachers
Behind the scenes of the beautiful space that Tatanka Academy moved into this fall are dedicated teachers working hard. Rarely are teachers challenged to move into a new facility, work for a new school (Tatanka is just entering its 2nd year) and develop into a strong team to meet the educational challenges of their students!
To support the teachers, enter Beth Jorgenson, an experienced and current first-grade teacher who is serving as a mentor to the Tatanka teaching team.
| | Beth Jorgenson is our hero this month for her work mentoring our Tatanka teachers. |
Meeting twice a month, Beth works with the Tatanka teachers as a curriculum coach and as a resource to handle common issues like classroom management and lesson development.
For Beth, extending her love of educating children to working with teachers is a natural, "I love teaching," said Beth. "Expanding to teaching teachers is fun!" Additionally, Beth knows how critical teachers are to young children. "Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade teachers are heroes to kids," said Beth. "We have a greater impact on children than we realize. We're part of nightly dinner conversations and kids look up to us, so it's important to be a role model by showing integrity, compassion and courage in life."
Our hero Beth holds a masters degree in curriculum and development. She's been a teacher in the Edina Public School District for 10 years.

Terrie's Blog Delivers Sippy Cup Success!
Terrie's blog continues to reassure parents with thoughtful, action-oriented advice. Enjoy this follow-up from a mother who asked Terrie a question, and then shared the successful outcome.
In January, 2010, a mother asked Terrie the following.
At the 18-month checkup for our 21-month old son, the doctor said we should get him off the bottle but so far we have not had any luck. He drinks 5 to 10 ounces of milk before he goes to sleep at 8:00 p.m. and then a few of more 6 ounce bottles during the night. Do you have any suggestions on how to get him off the bottle? Do you have any suggestions how to get him to give up his feedings during the night?
Terrie answered the question on her blog shortly after receiving the question, and in February, the mother shared the following with Terrie:
My husband and I thought that your answers were really good. We recently started to mix water with milk during the night for our son. When our son woke up 4 or 5 times last night, we gave him only 2 5-ounce bottles. We hope to get our son to sleep through the night first, then we'll work on getting him off the bottle. When I saw your expert reply posted right away - I was so impressed! There are so many websites offering "advise" on how to raise kids...but very few answers are offered by trained professionals like you. If you can spread the word, you could have a large number of people come to you for advice. I have sent your URL to several of my friends! I found myself going down the list of questions/answers and reading them just like a book (I also like when you use heading for each point you make). They all either apply to my kids or someone I know! Thank you for wonderful site and postings! Keep up the great work!

REPLICATION UPDATE
Baby's Space Expanding to Brooklyn CenterBaby's Space is excited to partner with the Brooklyn Center School District in a soon-to-be-built Teen Parent and Childcare Center. The school district has received funding from the Bremer Foundation and Hennepin County to address teen pregnancy in Brooklyn Center, which has the highest rate of teen births in the state. Pregnant and parenting teens exposed to poverty face tremendous barriers to social, academic, and parenting success, as do their children. The new center will focus on young parents who are living in poverty. "We're pleased to partner with Baby's Space," said Keith Lester, superintendent of the Brooklyn Center School District." "The Baby's Space model is a proven change-agent. We look forward to using the Baby's Space model to provide a critical link by offering quality childcare and education as well as parenting support and mental health services."

BABY'S SPACE RECEIVES 2nd SOCIAL VENTURE GRANT
Social Venture Partners Minnesota (SVP MN) has announced that Baby's Space will receive a second grant of $25,000. SVP MN is an organization of investors who provide charitable dollars, time and expertise to social entrepreneurs who create better ways to solve complex social problems.
The second gift to Baby's Space was announced when the SVP MN board assessed the organizations receiving grants (including Baby's Space) by analyzing the feasibility of capacity building plans. The analysis also included a presentation by Terrie Rose.
The second grant will allow Baby's Space to continue implementing our national replication model that includes supporting nearly 2,000 young children in 40 child development centers in 5 geographic regions by 2015.
