Greg Abell's Leading Through Change and Conflict Workshop - February 28, 2012
Is your organization experiencing change and conflict? Many of our most significant leadership challenges show up in the context of change and conflict. A common characteristic of effective leaders is that of "vision". This vision often involves individuals and teams changing so as to achieve some degree of improvement. At the same time we know that individuals and organizations often exhibit significant resistance to change. This seminar will explore the role of leaders in helping individuals and groups to successfully navigate these challenges.

Economic Recovery: What can we do as leaders?
The Economics Challenge Day was held at Watson Furniture in Poulsbo, Washington on December 9, 2011. The day's theme was "What can we do as leaders to boost economic recovery in Kitsap County?" Clif McKenzie, CEO of Watson Furniture, welcomed the class. He described the benefits to the community of having a manufacturing facility in Kitsap County and his philosophy of building and sustaining a successful business. Cary Bozeman, CEO of Port of Bremerton, followed up with his beliefs of being a leader in the community. Elizabeth Scott, Ph.D., Regional Labor Economist for Washington State Employment Security, gave the latest hard core economic data for Kitsap County. Kitsap Economic Development Alliance's (KEDA) new Executive Director, John Powers, was able to contribute current economic data to the discussion and his vision for Kitsap County. Russell Steele and Leonard Forsman, CEO of Port Madison Enterprises and Chairman of the Suquamish Tribe respectively, described the impact Port Madison Enterprises and the Tribe had on the economy over the last year and their goals for 2012.
After a tour of the furniture factory and lunch, the class listened to Clif McKenzie and Judy Mentor Eagleson, CEO of The Mentor Company, discuss the pros and cons of owning a business in Kitsap County. Executive Director of PSNS&IMF, Rick Tift (LK00), expanded on the importance of a military and government presence to Kitsap County's economic stability. The day wrapped up with a debate, facilitated by Poulsbo City Councilman, Ed Stern. The class explored the pros or cons of NASCAR and green business practices. The exercise increased awareness and understanding surrounding economic issues in Kitsap County to the class. Advantage Nissan and Paladin Data Systems sponsored the day.

LK Class Explores Health Data of Kitsap County and It's Resources
The Healthy Community Challenge day was facilitated and organized by LK Board members, Connie Merrill (LK03) and Marie Singleton (LK09). Kitsap Public Health District Deputy Director, Scott Daniels (LK06), and Kitsap Public Health District Epidemiologist, Siri Kushner, provided the class with current data and trends regarding critical health issues in Kitsap County. The class learned that where you live in the county can determine your overall health as well as an individual's behaviors and choices. Before lunch, class members participated in five round table discussions of their choice. Their options were: Children (birth - five), Teen Suicide, Homeless Youth, Volunteer Opportunities, Mental Health, Healthcare for the Underserved, Homeless Coalition, and Aging & Long Term Care.
After a working lunch, compliments of Harrison Medical Center, the class watched a thought-provoking documentary examining how one's economic situation can predict one's health status. The afternoon revolved around a challenge day activity that ultimately broadened the class member's knowledge on various key health care and social service agencies available in Kitsap County. The participating agencies were: Holly Ridge Center, Peninsula Community Health Services, Chuckwagon Senior Nutrition Program, Stand Up for Kids, Kitsap Mental Health, Hospice of Kitsap County, Kitsap County HIV /AIDS Foundation, Kitsap Continuum of Care Coalition, Suquamish Tribal Human Services, and Crisis Clinic of the Peninsulas. The class was given scenarios of actual family cases in Kitsap County and used the various agencies to find solutions. Harrison Medical Center, KPS Health Plans, and DiMartino Associates, Inc. were the day's sponsors.
