State Government Day (Trip to Olympia)

The class of 2011 began their day in Olympia with Secretary of Transportation; Paula Hammond. Hammond was able to give the class an overview of the challenges in her department and highlights of current projects in Kitsap County. During a meeting with Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler; the class learned the various responsibilities of his position and current challenges his office is facing. Good questions from the class, especially regarding health insurance issues, made for a lively discussion. The class met with Marty Loesch, Director of External Affairs and Senior Counsel to the governor in Gregoire's conference room. Mr. Loesch gave a candid overview of what the current environment is like in Olympia during this legislative session. Class members shared lunch with Rep. Christine Rolfes, Rep. Kathy Haigh, Sen. Tim Sheldon, Sen. Derek Kilmer, and Rep. Jan Angel's assistant, Debbie Austin. After visiting Committee Hearings after lunch, the class ended their day in Olympia with Justice Mary Fairhurst, at the Hall of Justice. Fairhurst gave an engaging overview of the process of higher courts in Washington State and then took the class on a "behind the scenes" tour of the Hall of Justice.

LKAA is Awarded $500 for Mardi Gras Float at Clearwater Casino
 LKAA was awarded $500 from the Clearwater Casino's Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras Float Parade, held on March 8th. The floats were amazing! A huge thank you to Amanda Cheatham, Janis Castle, and Maurice Correia for their hard work designing and building the LKAA float. All proceeds will benefit the Hanten-Berger Scholarship Fund. Thank you Clearwater Casino, for supporting our local charities and service organizations.

Public Safety Day
March 11, 2011
Venue: Kitsap County Administration Building and Commissioner's Chambers
Kitsap County Prosecuting Attorney, Russell Hauge, educated the class on Prosecution 101, followed by a presentation by Tim Drury, current LK president and Kitsap County's felony division chief, on case loads the prosecutor's office faces on a daily basis. The class was able to tour the jail and get a first-hand look at life behind bars. Ken Bagwell facilitated a panel discussion with Kitsap County Sheriff's Department Chief of Patrol Gary Simpson (LK '97), and Jim Burchett, a Bremerton Police Department Captain. The issue of keeping law enforcement officials safe was discussed. Kitsap County Prosecutor, Kevin Kelly (LK '09), and Defense Attorney Jake Murphy, gave an in-depth presentation on Kitsap County's Drug Court and its impact in Kitsap County during lunch. South Kitsap Fire and Rescue Chief, Wayne Senter, enlightened the class about the proposed fire district merger with South Kitsap and Bremerton. Finally Leadership Kitsap class members practiced mock criminal cases and determined sentencing based on actual guidelines used by Kitsap County prosecuting attorneys.

Leadership Development Day

Do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day? On March 18th, the Leadership Kitsap Class of 2011 spent an entire day at IslandWood, located on Bainbridge Island, discussing their top five strengths based on an assessment they did through Strength Finders 2.0. The morning was devoted to debriefing the assessment results with the class broken down into their current service project teams. Mike Plotts, PSNS&IMF Employee Development Manager with the Command University, facilitated the four-hour debrief with the class. Board members, Leslie Cole, Greg Abell, and Gina Huston assisted Mike. The afternoon included a tour of the facility and grounds. Tour favorites included the suspension bridge, the tree house, the floating classroom, and the canopy tower. Greg Abell, Sound Options Group, wrapped up the day with discussions on managing transitions and leading through change. Many thanks to Greg Abell and Sound Options Group, and to the entire staff and docents at IslandWood.

Alumni Leadership Award Nominations Now Being Accepted
LKAA is currently accepting nominations for the 2011 Outstanding Alumni Leadership Award. This annual award recognizes an alumnus who best represents the principles of Leadership Kitsap in the community. Nominations will be accepted until May 13, 2011. The award will be presented at the 2011 Graduation Ceremony on June 21st at Kiana Lodge.
