Healthy Community Day * January 14, 2011
Sponsored by: Harrison Medical Center, KPS Health Plans and Di Martino Associates, Inc.
Venue: Harrison Medical Center, Silverdale.
Kitsap County Health Director, Dr. Scott Lindquist, gave a straightforward report of the current, critical health issues in Kitsap County. The class learned that prescription drug abuse has surpassed meth as the drug of choice in Kitsap County. Depression and its side-effects are still the primary healthcare concerns in the county. Before lunch, class members participated in four round table discussions of their choice. Their options were: Children (birth - five), Teen Suicide, Volunteer Opportunities, Mental Health, Healthcare for the Underserved, Homeless Coalition, and Aging & Long Term Care. After a working lunch, complements of Harrison Medical Center, the class watched a thought-provoking documentary examining how one's economic situation can predict one's health status.
The afternoon revolved around a challenge day activity that ultimately broadened the class member's knowledge on various key health care and social service agencies available in Kitsap County. The participating agencies were; Holly Ridge Center, Peninsula Community Health Services, Chuckwagon Meals on Wheels, Stand Up for Kids, Kitsap Mental Health, Hospice of Kitsap County, AIDS Foundation, Kitsap Homeless Coalition, and Kitsap Aging & Long Term Care. The class was given scenarios of actual family cases in Kitsap County and used the various agencies to find solutions. Thank you to Deborah Horn, Connie Merrill, and Marie Singleton for chairing and facilitating the day.
