"It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things."

Education Day Looks at Learning Alternatives Beyond the Typical Classroom
Education Day, sponsored by Olympic College Foundation and Kitsap Community Resources (KCR), was held on November 5 at KCR on Park Street in Bremerton. Greg Lynch, Leadership Kitsap (LK) Board member and Superintendent of Central Kitsap School District, debriefed the recent documentary on school systems titled, "Waiting for Superman" with the class of 2011. Greg also discussed why our community must work together to provide quality education for our children.
Lillian Hunter, Director of West Sound Technical School (WSTS), gave a presentation on the unique programs offered to local high school students. WSTS caters to Kitsap County, parts of Pierce, and Jefferson County.
Round table discussions focusing on alternative learning centers in Kitsap County dominated the rest of the day's activities. The round table topics were: Boys & Girls Club of South Puget Sound, facilitated by Beth Wallace; YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties, facilitated by Beth Pitts; Elizabeth Bergman facilitated group discussions on the Washington Youth Academy program ; and KCR's Head Start Early Learning Director, Connie Mueller, facilitated discussions on Early Learning Family Services.
Dr. Sandra Cross (LK'10) and LK Board members, Leslie Cole and Dr. Gina Huston (LK'08) facilitated the second annual Raw Egg Olympics. This hands-on activity is an example of a fun way to engage students in using math and science principles. The main auditorium at KCR was turned into a six event obstacle course including lots of raw eggs! |

Class of 2011 Explores What Drives Economic Development in Kitsap County
Economics Day, sponsored by Paladin Data Systems, Port of Bremerton, and Advantage Nissan, was held on December 3 at the New City Hall in Poulsbo. Poulsbo Mayor Becky Erickson and Poulsbo City Councilman, Ed Stern, were our hostess and facilitator respectively.
The class had the opportunity to sit in on the last 45 minutes of the Kitsap Economic Development Alliance (KEDA) Board meeting. During this time, Elizabeth Scott, Ph.D., Regional Labor Economist for Washington State Employment Security; gave an up-to-the-minute snapshot of Kitsap's economic numbers. KEDA's Executive Director, Bill Stewart, was able to answer questions the class asked regarding KEDA's mission and goals as well as some possible new businesses that are looking to relocate to Kitsap.
Silvia Klatman, NUWC Public Affairs Officer, presented the latest demographic statistics to the class. Executive Director of PSNS&IMF, Rick Tift (LK'00) expounded on the importance and significance of military and government to Kitsap County. Russell Steele and Leonard Forsman, CEO of Port Madison Enterprises and Chairman of the Suquamish Tribe respectively, updated the class on some new business ventures. Look for some exciting growth to stimulate the economy.
The class had an opportunity to listen to three success CEOs and business owners based in Kitsap County. Larry Nakata, President and Owner, Town & Country Markets, Inc.; Jim Nall, President and CEO, Paladin Data Systems; and Clif McKenzie, Owner and President of Watson Furniture Group. All three business leaders explained the pros and cons of conducting business in Kitsap County. The three gentlemen spoke about giving back to the community and building economic growth.
Port of Bremerton Commissioner, Roger Zabinski and Port of Bremerton Director of Business Development, Tim Thomson gave an interesting perspective of what growth opportunities the Port is presently working on. Ed Stern wrapped up the day by challenging the class to think about what they could do individually to stimulate economic development and growth. Mayor Becky Erickson challenged them all to take a risk and start a business. At the very least, this stimulated lots of lively discussion! |
